Newbe here, Just got back in good ole USA, wife and I are looking to buy a Lance 992 camper wet weight approx 4000 lbs and tow a boat approx weight 5000 lbs. I have been granted permission by the admiral of the house to get a new truck. I'm leaning towards a F-350, dually, 3.73, auto, 4X4, Lariat. My only point of contention is Diesel or V10. I have owned 6.0 in past and know power available, and all the associated maintenance costs.
Would the V10 have what it takes to carry my load up 6/7 percent grades without struggling? Would the maintenance costs be less? reliability?
I know it will eat gas, so I'm not all that concerned about fuel economy. Also this will be a daily driver.
Thanks, I appreciate any input.

Personally, I would give the V-10 the green light. I have both the V-10 and 6.0 PSD currently. For what you are looking at for use, the V-10 would more than fit the order. I would however go with a 4:10 limited slip rear end.
Currently diesel is higher at the pump. Maintance on the diesel can be deep on the wallet. DIY oil changes cost around $55. DIY fuel filter changes every 15,000 miles, a filter from Ford $60+, from International $35 to $40. This based on the 6.0 PSD. Over all mileage, empty the PSD will pull out a few more MPG, but the fuel is more expensive. OH and we haven't even gotten into the price of the V-10 option vs. the PSD on the sticker price of the truck.
I can't believe I am saying this, cause I am a diesel kind of guy.... I thought.
I would get the 4.30 ratio, limited slip rear. The rest sounds good F350, V10, dually. I think you really need the F350 dually for the camper you're looking at, and the V10 will have all the power you need.
I have had both as well ant the V10 will pull that load like there's no tomorrow. I would also go with the 4.10 or 4.30. The only thing you will need to get used to is when you hit a big hill the new three valve love to rev. The sound of the V10 pulling a load up a hill at 4K is wonderful. Yet on the flats she'll pull a 10K plus load all day in OD. I have gone to a 6.0 for now, but if I have any problems with it before the end of the lease, I'll drop it like a hot potato and go back to a V10.
While the V10 is a good choice the 4x4 350 DRW has a payload cap of (depending on cab and bed style) of between 5500 and 5300 pounds..And this will be reduced according to opions on the pickup..While IMO the truck should handle the load this is just something to think about..Also as Ace said, the 4.30 and limited slip would be the way to go..
I would go with the V10 with the lower rear since your want a dually 4:30:1. The way I look at it is you can buy a lot of gasoline for the $5000+ price difference. The V10 has plenty of power for the hills especially once it hits 2600+ rpm. My dads on his second v10 SD and I have my 1st V10 SD and no problems so far.
Thanks for the input. I do not believe I would exceed the GVWR or the CGVWR with camper and boat attached.
I understand the recommendation for going 4.10, but I really don't see what I would gain with the 4.30, except a little better low end pulling power.
Any idea of what the RPM band would be with 4.10 at 70 MPH in OD, compared to 4.30.
Also where is the deepest power band in relation to RPM with the V10 and when does it normally shift itself out of OD.
Thanks for all the good info, look forward to your input.

Using calculated tire sizes not the actual rolling diameter due to tire squat here it what it shows for all three ratio's, actual rpm will be a bit high due to squat.
3.73 at 65mph is 1840
4.10 at 65mph is 2022
4.30 at 65mph is 2120
I don't know about the dually, but the SRW has a higher payload capacity with the gas engines than the diesel. The difference in RPM/mileage I think would be insignicant from 4.1 to 4.3. I don't see a downside to the lower gearing, would always opt for lower gears than higher if given the same rpm/mileage, but that's your call. What is it, about 5% more torque with the 4.30 gearing? I'd want the 5%.
I feel better now. I just unloaded all of the ranch supplies and tools from the F-450 PSD over to the F-250 V-10. Now I can enjoy pumping gas vs. diesel. Enjoy $9.98 oil changes at the dealer. Wipe down of the vinyl seats rather than clean and condition the leather.
Have I mentioned how much I love the V-10 and the simple life of the XL model truck?
Get the 4:30's! You will pull much better in overdrive even with a load. For the guys that have gotten used to the 4:30's, it is a no brainer decision.
V10 with 4.30's will pull your load just fine. but with that much weight in the bed and height of the camper I would go with the DRW it will give much better stability on curves and in mountains. I believe all of the problems of the first V10's have been worked out leaving you with nothing but trouble free power.
