Morning, new to the site and to posting msgs. I recently bought my 4th ford vehicle and am having some problems w/ the check engine light and error code P0401. I have scoured this sight and tried cleaning carbon out of the tubes and looked for any cracks...no luck and still getting error code. I first had to code checked at autozone who quickly sold me a new EGR valve that I know realize I probably didn't need since P0401 is insufficient flow, not a bad EGR valve code! I have not replaced the DPFE sensor yet and plan on doing that next unless anyone else can give me some ideas. I'm only getting about 14 mpg all hwy driving at 70mph...don't know if that is related or not. My vehicle is a 2001 ford ranger Edge, 4x4, 3.0L v6, 76,000 miles.
Also, any idea where the PCV valve is...it has never been changed and I cannot locate it; my Haynes is not helping me any!!
P0401 is almost always a bad DPFE. So often that, if you were to bring your truck to a Ford dealer, they would replace the DPFE without even doing any pinpoint tests.
I am have the same problem on my '95 Ranger Super/XLT 4x4 4.0L V6 I just pulled all the EGR components and cleaned/checked them out. No build-up or blockage I could find! I am getting a new DPFE and I hope that's it.
If the DPFE doesn't fix er up, maybe it's the VSV, that operates the EGR valve.
"Oops" recently had a P0401, that a new DPFE didn't fix, turned out to her VSV!!!! But she was having some driveability problems you didn't mention, here is her thread on it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/578271-p0401.html
FYI - seems like I fixed mine! I installed a new DPFE (plastic, $107 at the dealer) and cleared the code. I've driven it every day 50+ miles. No more DTCs!

$107 ? Ouch! these dealers are a big rip off.
I got the same problem I'd replace mine with a plastic DPFE Wells brand from Autozone, damage $40, next time search around and save a few bucks!
Yeah, I know the dealer is $$ but the two local national chains I went to had to special order it and I was tired of looking at the "check engine light." They wanted $87 for it any ways.
Thanks everyone...replaced my DPFE with the "Wells" brand from aoutozone, $50.00. Have over 150 miles since then and no check engine light yet!
Also found my PCV that I've been looking at all along, the "elbow" on the original part was throwing me off!

Ford/Motorcraft parts usually have to pass higher quality control standards. On the other hand, I've heard of a few aftermarket DPFE's lasting less than 2 years. At least you know you didn't get junk.
FoMoCo parts can be $$ but you're right, at least you can trust the quality! There are a lot of parts I buy aftermarket, oil filters, plugs, etc. but still lots of things I prefer to get the OEM parts for. I've even experienced a difference between FoMoCo and MotorCraft.
I guess everyone has a different opinion.
I never buy OEM Ford parts, I do only if not available, I had fixed many, many cars with aftermarket parts, and never had any problem, and don't believe everything you hear!
Most Ford electronics parts are made in Mexico, China, and Korea, you're paying more for the Ford label, same electronics you buy at the auto parts, the mechanical parts I think Ford is better, but I still go to my local Autoparts, for rebuild ones, paying 3-4 times more the price at the dealer is not 4 me!
Parts quality had changed, today a Craftsman drill is about the same quality is Ryobi or Black and Decker. "MADE IN CHINA" and china parts.
