I just noticed a reddish colored spot under my 99 F150. When I crawled under it tonight, I saw an oily spot all around the rubber plug in the bell housing. I haven't noticed any performance issues yet and the fluid level is still ok, but on the low end. Is this a problem, is is it normal for a truck with just 57000 miles? I can honestly say I never noticed any leaks prior to this, but I wasn't specifically looking either. It's not as obvious as some would think when you have a gravel drive. I removed the plug and nothing dripped out then either. I was pulling a heavier load two weeks ago on my trailer, could I have damaged something then? What do I need to check? Thanks
I haven't changed the fluid yet. I bought this truck in 05' with 28000 miles on it. I know for a fact that the previous owner did ALL scheduled maintenance through the dealer as per the manuel. I'll have to check and see if he had that done yet? Is this a sign that my filter is dirty? I feel comfortable doing that myself, so maybe it's time?
I've pulled a heavy load before, but this is the first time I noticed the spot afterwards. I was pulling a trailer with probably 4500#'s or more on it added to the weight of the trailer. The trailer weighs in at 1600#'s empty on it's own.
