all i had to go by was what they told me. i guess there is a possibility that i messed them up but, i really don't see how. i will tell you this, i'm paying someone else to change plugs next time! it has to be cheaper than $500
If this happens to anyone in the future, be aware than Napa might have what you need. And I think Standard Motor Parts has a listing for injector connectors. Maybe not for all, but for some years.
The older the vehicle the harder some electrical connectors are to remove without breaking them... but with caution and patience, they usually can be removed and re installed with out damage... dealer techs that break things are always quick to blame the part and NOT their technique...honest and competent repair people should replace (at their cost) all parts and things that THEY break
In seven years this problem (on V8s or V10s) has only about 5 mentions on the three web sites I frequent....they were all older high mileage motors
First time I've ever heard of this as an "issue" .... I know old stuff breaks, but come on.
I'm still not sure what you mean by "caps".
There is the connector on the end of the wire, and the injector itself. What "cap" are you talking about?
Just over a year ago, I replaced the intake manifold on my '97 Cougar 4.6L (what a surprise). The injectors are physically the same (or similar) to my v10, and I had no problems removing and replacing the injector harness.

By the way, I didn't disconnect any injectors when I did my V10 - I turned some of them away from the spark plug hole, but never unplugged any...
the connectors were broken. the little clip piece that you have to push in to take the connector loose fell out of the connector. the hard cap is the square shaped female shroud, over the actual electrical connection, with the securing clip
