any ideas on how to stop the pinging.94 bronco mass air 302 , e4od. tuned all new plugs wires cap rotor , injectors cleaned , motor vac done etc. pings under load above 2000 rpm , no check engine light , no faults stored
any help is greatly appreciated

Check your timing with the Spout out. It is probably too advanced.
I believe it is supposed to be @ 10 degrees BTDC to be optimum. Mine will ping
if it is just two degrees higher and going up a hill. If I put some
Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas, the pinging stops. Your choice to try either.
If you want best mpg, time it to 10 degrees.
If you want a little more power advance it two degrees.
Put the Spout back in and test to see if you get advance with the timing light
when you advance the throttle to 2500 rpm.
If no advance, that could cause ping also.

If the timing check does not help, what type of plugs did you put in it? If they are platinums, they run considerably hotter than a copper core and can cause pinging. You can also put a set of cooler plugs in as well.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jul-02 AT 09:43 PM (EST)]thanks for the advice. timing is set at 10 degrees with spout out. anyone know what kind of advance there should be at 2500 or so rpms
also what controls
the advance curve . thanks. plugs are standard autolites
is there any harm to retarding the timing or running higher octane fuel ?

I don't know about possible harm but I run 92 octane and my timing
slipped back to zero degrees. Going up my steep hill did nothing
noticeable power wise, mpg dropped a bit. When I re-timed it, it
just seem to run smoother and more pep on the acceleration.
I run the NGK V-power plugs. Kragen has them.

BTW, I use to run dual platinum Autolite plugs and never noticed any pinging.
Less power under acceleration is a trait of platinum plugs.
The platinum plugs gave a longer life so I wouldn't have to fight to R & R the #3 & 4 plugs.
I have shorty headers and you can't use a socket and extension, only a socket and box wrench.
I also run a MSD 6a box and higher voltage ignition coil and metallic ignition wires.
Another possible reason for pinging is carbon deposits on the piston and valves.
I run a container of Techron every 3k miles or about every oil change.
The BMW mechanics use the stuff for beemers and swear by it,
I think it works better than any other cleaner on the market. It will
remove just about any carbon in one treatment. The BMW mechanics
don't advise using twice in a row as it can do damage,
The advance at 2500 rpm, I can't recall what degree it would be at, but when I see the
markings on the damper wheel (0, 10, 20, 30 degree marks), the markings disappear
and you would need a degree wheel to see where you are.
Haynes manual says that if you don't see much movement of the timing marks, the
EEC-IV Powertrain Control Module needs to be checked out.
You might also put a DVM on the battery to see that it is at 13.5 volts or more under acceleration.
Low voltage could possibly do harm.
Are you sure its pinging or just running crappy? When was the fuel filter last replaced?
It might be fuel starvation symptoms?

ron , thanks for the help. the fuel filter is new. the pressure was cecked while driving and pinging and it is within spec.i will try the techron stuff. im going to try to find out what the advance
curve is supposed to be. i feel that maybe the control unit is giving too much advance during acceleration between 2000 and 3000 rpm beacause thats where it pings the worst

A maf on the lean side can cause a ping. I see it all the time. Also make sure the egr works and fuel pressure is good. Make sure plug wire routing is proper. If 7 & 8 are routed next to each other that can cause cross induction firing.

Get a universal socket. No fighting with the plugs.
