OK, I know this truck doesn't fit our year models, but I feel more at home on this forum.
I have a 94 F250(recently purchased) with intermitent(sp) wipers, they will not auto park, run on low speed when any intermitent speed is selected, and if you push the washer button, you have to turn the key off to stop the wipers. My question is, is this a control box problem or switch? Or could it be the wiper motor?
I haven't had to deal with intermitent wipers before, all I deal with are on and off or air operated.
My guess as to where to start looking would be the park switch on the motor is frozen or sticking. Maybe someone left the wipers on and they froze to the windshield overnight stalling the motor the next time the truck was cranked up?
Thanks Ax, I pulled the front cover off of the motor and cleaned the contacts, made no difference. I noticed while messing with them last night, the relay in the control module will "chatter" when the wipers are switched on and off. Guess I'll start searching for a module.
I had the problem of no intermitent on my GMC Suburban. I though it might be in the switch, but really didn't want to tackle that and found a control module at Pep Boys (it was in the red and white "Help" packages) I put it on and they have worked fine since. The control module is attached to the wiper motor under the hood. I'm not sure about the ones on the newer fords, but I think I would try it first if it's as easy to get to as the GMC.
FOWL1, I wish it was that easy on a Ford. I have 3-4 control modules from different Ford vehicles and none of them will fit. Parts house said "dealer item", so you know what that means, yep $100 bill. Looks like its time to hit the salvage yard.
Yeah, Advance Auto told me it was a dealer item for the GMC. I found 1 and only 1 at the Pep Boys in our area. If you know the parts guy and they have a "Help" book that you can see if you can have them order it, that would be good. I think even that was like $35ish. I hate when they say dealer item. The "Help" stuff is in "Blister packs" usually with a red cardboard back. I don't know what king of auto parts places are in your area. I used to have a truck that if you used the washer, it would pump and pump until it was out of fluid. I think that was a suburban as well. GM has been using those all in one wiper/washer motors for years and they suck when they act up. Ford always used a seperate washer motor so at least you could put a switch and aftermarket washer motor on if you wanted to. Good luck man, I feel your pain.
GM had heck with their wipers on trucksk for years, I had an 87 truck that would intermittantly wipe eveyonce in awhile. You'd be driving down the road and the wipers would make one pass then quit.
Thanks for the tip for the "Help" section at Pepboys, my 93 GMC suburban wipers won't quit either.
Good luck with the Ford Jeff, I would guess at the module
Bobby
Bobby, my uncle had a GM van that had a habit of the wipers making one swipe now and then, seemed to me there was no specific time or reason either. Bad part about this was he lived in the MS delta where the bugs were terrible. One swipe would smear the bug juice to the point of pulling over and using the washer to clear up enough to see again.
Looks like I'll just have to live with my wiper problem until funds allow the purchase of the module.
Yeah, I had a ghost in mine as well. Only sometimes when I would make a right hand turn they would make one swipe. People who had never experienced it before would say "why did you do that?" I would say do what? I just told them that the Suburban must have been used by the Mafia to transport bodies and theat was one of the ghosts left over who wasn't going to be "wiped" out. Ha! Get it? Wiped out. I kill me. Ha ha.
Sounds like the famous "GM Phantom Wipers" to me........very common I beleive the problem lies in the multi-function switch........ I had the same problem on my Fiero......was dirty contacts in the switch.
If you do that google thing for "phantom wipers" and possibly add "GM" to the search you should get some info.
Here is one story: http://autorepair.about.com/library/a/1a/bl552a.htm
UPDATE: I pulled the front cover of of the wiper motor again today. The contacts looked a little pitted, so I filed them down smooth and cleaned the brass disk that they ride on with a pencil eraser. Seems like that did the trick, but I will probably replace the wiper motor soon.
Thanks all for the suggestions.
