It's definitely not impossible. I've done it many times until I was told it wasn't a good idea (relating to the battery acting like a filter cap). My luck, I'd try it one more time, and that would be when it takes out the PCM...

Regular cars may have permanent magnets in the alternators which dont need a current to produce current if you will, or the exciter coil is energized by the alternator once its running not the battery. When u say u unhook the battery are you taking both cables off the battery, or just the positive side? Im not sure the specs on a powerstroke alternator it may have something to do with charging two batteries, i would have to see a schematic of the electrical in the truck to tell you why or try to tell you why it dies.
