I have a 52 f-2 and when looking to replace the wheels it was braught up about the weight of my truck verses the f-1. you may want to check that out before replacing your front end. My tires have the 8 bolt pattern and I anted to go to the 5 for availability of rims. have not made my decision yet but thought I would mention it.
I second keeping it stock. Napa carries everything you would need or lmc trucks has a great selection plus pics. I own a stock 60 (8yrs now) and just did the front end bushings and what a difference it made. I just watched an episode of TRUCKS on tv that showed The new semi front end and guess what they use? same thing you got under your truck, built to last, strong, and haul the heavy loads also cheap to fix. Plujs there's nothing like that truck driving feeling.
thanks for the help. the more i look at it and the cost think i will stay stock, but i would like to go to disc brakes and change the 8 lug to 5. not sure about that yet still thinking. i'll check with Napa about the cost of rebuilding the front end. also thinking about changing the (57 model) 312 for a 6 or 302. not going to be hauling alot of weight in the back also so i'm going to change the overload leafs. what ever they were hauling they broke all the leafs and they are going to have to be replacee. a friend has a 73 or 74 torino and i'm going to see if the rear end will interchange with mine. it's free so guess it does'nt hurt to look. i have the timkin 3/4ton rear end and don't think i can find highway gears to change out. thanks again for all the help
Compared to updating suspension, brakes, steering, dropping in new engine and trans, and rebuilding the other stuff, would it be easier (although still a lot of work) to put an old cab and bed on a newer truck?
I hope to transform my Ranger in this manner someday, also keeping the old VIN so it's registered with the state as a '52 or whatever. I haven't made measurements yet, but I thought it probably could work. Has someone thought of it already?

Putting an old truck on a newer frame has been done but it is not as easy as you might think and there is very little in the way of documentation on it. Plus, the older frame is thicker and heavier and easy to modify.
thought about a newer frame, but can't find anything close enough without modifying old cab to fit. still want to keep as close to original as possible with updated suspension or at least updated brakes. also when i get my frame cleaned up i think i'm going to try out Rust Bullet on it. looks like a good product, but have talked to other people about it and they say their are cheaper ways to inhibit rust. also on the frame i like the old style frame it's strong and the straight lines of the frame are simple and looks like it will be easy to modify if i decide to. Hey thanks to everyone for the help and thanks for the great welcome to the forum. let ya'll know what happens.
I helped a friend pick up a 72' Ranchero last weekend. The 9" under it is a four link set-up with coil springs.
good luck with the truck. I still can't get the spousal unit to buy off on letting me get one.
Hey man that's great. maybe the torino will have the same thing. i'll find out saturday. keep talk'n to the wife and she'll come around. i do know he said the rearend on the Torino was a 8.8 not a 9, but maybe he's wrong. we'll see. thanks again for the reply.
I'm comitted to putting a 49 onto an 2002 ranger chassis/driveline but i need original 49 frame specs to procede further. Can any one help? Right now i'v only got a 49 cab so there's no reference points to go from. If i had the mesurement from the front 49 cabmount to front axele centreline the rest will fall into place.
Eric.
