The tranny is in a '90, 4.9, 2x4, F150. I drive a '91, 5.8, 2x4, F250. The only way I know to ID the E40D is to check the dash for the OD button? There is also a hole at bottom (can I access the torch drain plug from here?) of the bell housing and I see the #45 on top. Here is the VIN#1FTDF15Y0LNA68875.
It's going to take a lot for me to pull this tranny... Is there anything else I need to make sure of.... So I know it's a match and if it's good?
I pulled the stick... looks cherry red and I just don't know what it should smell like. I did smell it... nothing unusual.
The pan is leaking pretty badly.
Is there anything else I can check to give me a better clue..... Is this a direct bolt in?
Should I drain the torch and check the fluid further?
I can't tell you whether the trans you are looking at is good or not but I can help you with identifying one. The tranny code is found on the safety compliance certification label on the driver's side door jamb. Look on the label for trans and the code for an E4OD is an "E". An AOD is "T" and a C6 is "G". The E4OD has 20 bolts holding on the pan and the pan is shaped like the state of Utah. The AOD and 4R70W have 14 bolts. The E4OD also has an electrical harness that attaches on the rear passenger side of the trans as well as the wiring on the drivers side. Here is a pic of an E4OD from a 4X4:
It is a large transmission. I though the AODE in my Mustang was big and heavy but this thing dwarfs it. Be careful taking it out.

It's been a while. I pulled it and finally got put in. My major concern was seeding the torque convertor properly. Well, she sucked up all the fuild and it turned out to be a good tranny.... Thanks for the help.
Question: I'm hearing a whinning sound coming from the tranny area while driving. I'm told this is normal with Ford Trucks. Did I do something wrong? What say you?
For a '90 300 donor, the only auto tranny choices are the C6 and E4OD. So if you got the lockout button and 20pan bolts, yer good to swap right into yer F-2fiddy.
The E4OD is a monster if you've never moved one before. Have a friend handy with a good tranny jack.
Now the question is if it's good, well that's a 50/50 chance you have to take.
I got her in and she's shifting great! What luck! Some say it really wasn't luck, we (FTE members) really did our homework. Number 1 was checking the quality of the fluid. The fluid was cherry/beet red and smelled fresh on of the bottle.
And I have lots of help identifying correct model she was a direct fix.
Many books and friends advised to drop the exhaust cross member for ease and and better access... I really didn't have to and go it in fine.
While I was out.... I applied LP air through the cooling lines, and man you should have seen the gunk that discharged from the lines. I also, put a qt of lucas tranny tune-up in.... no leaks.
It's the winning that concerns me... some say it's normal?
how is the possibility to swap a c6 for such a E4OD?
mine has the bigblock housing (i know about the electric and axle stuff).
Does the E4OD physically fit in the tunnel where once a C6 was situated?
My intention is to put the E4OD in my '79 lincoln towncar...
Thanks.
okay, but will this be due the C6 being tapered, and the surgery have done halfway to the end, er stright from the beginning? (starting at the bellhouse, or 5-6 inches from the bellhouse..?)
This is important to me, as the firewall is supported by a square frame from left to right, wich runs over the bellhousing. AFTER that frame, cutting isn't that hard. before, is almost impossible, as i will absolutely weaken the whole construction, and else it would be just some sheet metal, folding over the new tranny...
I don't know, and I doubt anyone else does either unless they happen to have performed this exact same swap AND are reading this thread.
This is the risk when you take on a swap that was never done by a factory. You are going to have to rely on your own creativity and resourcefulness. You aren't always going to find the answers out ahead of time.
i know...
But i can't even find some decent pictures of a C6 and a E4OD beside eachother...
I figure they are more often swapped out, so these should be available somewere somehow...
Then i can make a descision on wether it would fit or not, and start throwing green....
