i'm usually pretty good at these problems but now i'm baffled. i had to tighten my header bolts today, then added ground from starter bolt to frame. now truck won't start. made sure no broken wires that i could see. i have spark. checked inertia switch. the only other thing i did was grease u joints. what am i missing? you can hear fuel pumps.
i have been trying to fix my problem of not charging properly. new starter etc. tried running a ground to alt. bracket. starter works ok. spark ok. will try to get a fuel pressure reading tomorrow. i have looked for broken wires etc. no luck. i have tightened header bolts many times before with no problems. turns over ok, it seems like i'm missing something that would complete the circuit to let the engine keep running.

The frame is not used as a ground unless you are using it for a ground for your trailer or taillights. There are a few static ground straps from the body to the frame if the truck came with a factory radio.
It sounds like you may have lost the body ground at the radiator support for the PCM Computer. Body grounds are very important, make sure the body is well grounded not the frame.

you were right about the ground to rad. support, fixed and now runs ok. thanks. will change ground from frame to body.
The 94 F150 I pulled my 351 out of had a lug crimped on the ground wire mid-way between the battery and the engine block that was bolted to the frame. My 87 does not have this as far as I can tell.

That lug crimped on the ground wire mid-way is bolted to the body on the 89 that I just looked at and to the frame on a 95. It does not appear in the wiring diagrams for either truck. The lug may be just used to hold the battery cable in place. It does not hurt anything to ground the frame to the battery or body.
But do not ground the engine to the frame or body unless you use a cable as large or larger than the battery cables. If you do you can cause a fire or do other damage if the battery cable loses ground on the engine block and you engage the starter.
As I said above it does not serve any useful purpose to ground the frame other than to discharge static or to use for running a ground to a trailer through the frame. If you do use the frame for a ground I think I would run a better ground wire to the frame from the battery and not trust what is there now.
If you run a 4ga wire from the engine to the body then you would also have to run a 4ga from the body to the battery or you could melt all of the body ground wires.
I would remove that wire before you take out the PCM Computer or any thing else. Battery to body ground good, Battery to frame good, engine to body bad.
