Hey Everyone,
I just got done replacing the u-joints and ball joint on my 88 drive shaft. Got it all put back together without to many problems. Then I just took it for a test drive and I have a really fine vibration around 55 and up. I have heard talk of needing to balance the shaft and then I have heard there is no need to balance the shaft. Does anyone have any experience here????? I am slowly posting pics in my gallery of the process, if a visual is needed. Any help or comments would be great. I am making a long trip next weekend and need it fixed asap!
Thanks for any comments ya'll can offer!!!
Did you by chance get your drive-shaft out of phase when you changed u-joints. Getting a drive-shaft out by 180 degrees can cause a vibration. You need to mark how the shaft comes out and how it comes apart at the joints so you can be sure to keep the drive-shaft in phase. If it is out of phase at the joints you either have to redo the joints or have the d-shaft rebalanced if it is out on the yoke just turn it 180 degrees and you should be fine. Also you could have a bad tranny mount I have replaced u-joints and found that the tranny mount was bad too this caused the u-joints to wear faster and a vibration when I replaced the joints. The u-joints get used to the change in drive-line angle from the bad tranny mount then you put in new u-joints and they don't give like the old ones. Hope this helps and Good Luck,

You may have to have the driveshaft balanced. Like the previous post stated you need to keep the shaft in phase when you put it back together. I did not last time I rebuilt my rear driveshaft and had to shell out around $60 to get it balanced. If you do end up getting it balanced, before you reinstall it take a can of spray paint and run a line up the side of the driveshaft to further eliminate any future problems with phase. Good Luck!
hey guys,
Thanks for the posts. I am pretty sure that I keep it in phase. I marked the pieces before removing. I am wondering about the tranny mount though. Should it move at all?? If i get under there and shake the driveshaft side to side it gives alittle but it is a rubber mount I think. Is this ok?? Any other ideas?
Thanks Again!
The tranny mount is like motor mounts it is rubber but it is hard and you should not be able to move it. How many miles on vehicle? An 88 that has never been replaced should be replaced. The mount takes a beating especially on a 4x4 with all the extra weight of the transfer case on it. Mount should cost less than $20.00.

Depends, not that it is hard more like a pain sometimes. On some models you have to drop the cross-member to get to the mount. You will need some sort of jack or something to keep the tranny and t-case supported while you replace the mount. Good Luck,

Nice!! I will try that first before balancing since i have it all put back together.
I am also wondering if the ball joint has anything to do with it. You will notice in my gallery a pic of the post and bowl the ball fits into. The bowl is pretty worn but i decided to let it go for now. think this could cause probs!!
