Well folks was the Home Depot yesterday here in Baltimore but about 75 miles from home, loaded my stuff in the truck got in started her up & noticed a piece of paper on my far right windshield. Got out ot get if off & whala.. the wind blew the door closed behind me & somehow it was locked. So here I am standing in parking lot cold & windy as a witchessss, about 75 miles from home watching as the truck is idling in the parking space.
Thought for a bit & called a buddy who ownes a "real" locksmith shop, he was there in about 15 minutes, point being it only took him exactly 1.5 minutes to get the door open....... Scary thought......
Well, I did the same thing at a job I was doing at Jax State U in Jacksonville, AL except it was due to my remote start/alarm system.... truck locked, I watched it idle sadly.. called campus PD they came and had my door opened in all of 30 seconds. It was scary, and if I tell you guys how they did it you will probably freak but I am not posting it publicly.
my wife did the same thing a few years back when she was about 7 months pregnant. we were on the other side of the state, she went to get something out of the truck and remembered everything except the keys. called a tow truck, while the guy was training someone he was in my truck in about 30 seconds. didnt make me feel the greatest after that.
Yup. Did the same thing last year. Took me, never having done it on my truck before, about thirty seconds. Definitely not the best designed door lock...
A security system with an ignition lockout, fuel pump disable, shock sensor and perimeter sensor are all VERY good things to have in any vehicle. For less than $150 in parts you can install a nice security system.
Most cars are the same way. Late 80s/early 90s GMC cars are the worst. The door locks are only for looks and a simple break to the steering column lets you easily hotwire the ignition. I think every one of them in this city has been stolen at least once...
Heck, with the GMs, a quick pull with the slide hammer removes the ignition tumbler assembly. Then use a vice grips or needle nose pliers to start the vehicle.
Remember this guys... Locks only keep the honest people honest... I dont care what you do, if someone wants it bad enough they are going to get it. My cousin had someone take down a chain link fence and use a whole car jack to get one of his cars once. It was never recovered.
Well, I'll have to learn y'alls secret. Mine locked in one time while filling up with gas and I have no idea how it locked, but it did. There just happened to be a cop right behind me, and he just happened to have a slim jim. But he tried for nearly 20 minutes to get it open and couldn't. I had my wife bring me my extra key. I still don't know how I locked it behind me, but it made me get in the habit of always taking the key with me, even when filling up with gas.
If I get out of my truck while its running to hook up a tow strap, get something out of the hatch or whatnot, I usually lower a window enough so that I could reach in and hit the unlock.
That or I switch the truck over to the remote start and take the keys with me.
I dont care what you do, if someone wants it bad enough they are going to get it.
Truer words were never spoken...
Everything is a deterrent. It just slows 'em down.
Some people who've tried to fortify the door find out they just wind up with even more damage, and still get broken into anyway.
Mine's stock. The only reason I thought of putting a motion detector on it was because the neighbor's kid is a pain in the butt...
But my '01 is totally stock. I certainly understand the need for doing more.
I know I've done it on other cars, but I think on the SD, you could remove the rubber strip on the outside of the window by hand. Then, look inside, you should be able to find something to push or pull on that will unlock the door.
The biggest thing is to make your truck look unappealing to thieves. Most vehicle related crimes are those of opportunity.
Up here at school, I have heard many many people complain that their cd player, subs, wallet, etc was taken out of their vehicle. I have NEVER had a problem with that in my Mustang and I have close to 1500 in audio equipment in the car. The difference between us? I always keep my windows up and the doors locked. I have an alarm system with a bright blue light that tells potential thieves that the car will make noise and will draw attention. I do NOT drive through campus with my system turned up or through any busy place with it cranked. I don't have decals and such for whats in there either. I also do not keep sunglasses, change, fuzz buster, etc out in plain view. If a thief doesn't see something appealing right away they will move onto another vehicle which will be easier for them to smash and grab.
