I have a 63 223 which should have its timing set at 4deg. BTDC. IT barley runs at this setting. I have to rotate the dizzy a good 20 degrees before it smooths out. New cap, rotor, rebuilt carb. What is the cause of this condition?
If it has a harmonic balancer, the outer ring with the timing marks is probably slipped. I would bring it to true TDC by the position of the number one piston, and mark the damper there.
Thanks for the reply Ford six. I checked the timing marks. Brought #1 to TDC and they matched up within a couple of degrees. I have to advance the timing so far that the Vacuum advance unit touches the block even then it runs rough but it will start and run in this position.
Best way to find BTDC without trusting the timing mark is to plug #1 with a candle. turn engine over(coil disconected) till you hear"pop" . When it pops the candle out you know for sure its at BTDC, then adjust the distributer to the correct location. I should charge for this "old school" advice.
If you can get a second hand. Have somebody put a finger into the cylnder whole. With a ratchet/breaker bar turn the crank (bottom pully) untill the other person feels compression (pressure) on they're finger. That will give you the compression stroke.
