Best timing setting

Been searching around on here. I know 10BTDC is the stock timing but also have seen some people setting theirs to 12 or 14. What's the optimal setting? Just leave it stock?

Start off at stock & then set it to what it likes..............it is all very dependent on fuel quality, temp, humidity, altitude, etc.

Mine runs at 20* initial, and 42* total, so your aftermarket parts also factor in. Play with it, until you find the happy place.

When you say "play with it" what exactly am I looking for? First time timing anything.

rotate the dist until you find the spot the engine runs the fastest/smoothest (or creates the highest vacume if using a vacume gauge) you are likely within 1-2 degrees of on the mark! Adjust the fuel mixture, idle speed and you can go...if it pings at all, back the timing down 1-2 degrees.

On our 4.9L/300 6 cylinder engines, rotating the distributor clockwise retards the timing and counter clockwise advances.

If after advancing, you experience pinging under a light load, retard slightly and drive again.
