I just bought my first diesel, 2000 F250 with a 7.3. My first tank of gas was mostly around town with about 70 miles on the highway and the rest in the city. I averaged 11mpg and was wondering if this is normal and if not what I can do to boost it a bit.
Welcome!
-Drain and refill your differentials with a good synthetic gear oil.
-Replace fuel filter (Wix perferably).
-Drain and replace oil(Rotella, Delo are good ones) and filter(Wix perferably).
-Goto Napa and get a 46637 air filter, remove stock air box.
-Get rid of the muffler.
-Drain and refill tranny and txfer case with a good synthetic ATF fluid and change tranny filter.
-Get a chip or programmer with an econo setting.
-Get some dieselkleen additive for your fuel.
-Keep RPMs below 2000.
-That will get you started!
Welcome to FTE!! you'll definitely save money by spending time on this site!!
My '02 is getting 13-14 around town on a lot of short runs. Highway mileage runs as high as 19-20, depending on how patient I am about staying at or below 70 mph.
Couple of other things Rampage didn't mention is the zodad mod and the removal of the air intake heater (AIH delete mod), which requires a plug to close up the hole. DieselSite has them for $8 plus shipping. Other folks have used a standard oil drain plug that is, I think, 22mm, and is a lot cheaper.
Here is a link to several good page swith lots of maintenance and mod information.
I cant beleave this........this thread was not about all the "Do it yourself" mods, it was about what was normal gas milage in a 7.3L. I hope you guys didnt scare him away .
Tire sisze is the biggest factor in fuel economy, I have the 235/85's and they give me 19mpg on the highway and 15-16 city, IF I keep my foot out of it...

Many of the "DIY Mods" can help with economy, as long as he keeps his foot out of it, as was stated already...

jvoight, I believe we were all addressing the above portion of Ryan's initial post, most or all of the mods mentioned being targeted towards increasing engine efficiency.
O.K. everybody stop.... ryanmack55, first, DONOT LOOK AT THE LITTLE COMPUTER THINGY ABOVE YOUR REARVIEW MIRROR. IT LIES. try to calculate your mpg by calculator. fill up, reset trip meter, drive, fill up, divide miles driven by gallons pumped. I think you will see that you are getting better mpg than you thought (if you were using the lie-o-meter). I am getting 16mpg mixed driving with the setup in my signature.

Thanks for any help you can give me.
You probably want to start by filling the tank with diesel instead of gas. Sorry had to do it. I already switched to Synthetic engine oil and noticed a 1mpg increase but I still don't think the price of that oil makes up for doubling the price of oil to switch to synthetic. Just remember fuel milage increase dramatcally in the summer at least it does for me here in Alaska. I go from 14mpg to 18mpg just from season change.
