MPG suggestions
Rampage, brings up a good point check all of your intake boots, and clamps. I am not trying to patronize, but you said you were new to diesels, so the intake boots are not just from the air filter to the turbo, but also the other 8 that connect the silver intercooler pipes, one on each side in the front that looks like there going to the radiator, and 1 on each side that go to the turbo, these will probably be blue in color, then underneath the turbo is a Y pipe that has 2 that are probably red or orange, and then just above the air filter is the CCV return that has two clamps on it. make sure all the clamps ar tight, an easy way to tell if you have a boost leak on intake is to look for oily grimy blow out around the tubo.
Also if you have not tried Stanadyne, or another quality additive such as DiesleKleen in your fuel tank then I recommend that. It will increase your mileage some(dont expect 4-5 mpg but more like 1 to 1.5).
Also you are running a larger tire than stock, make sure they are inflated to 45 to 50 PSI, yes I know the ride is harsher, but like mentioned above we are driving 8k# vehicles and higher tire pressure will result in less rolling force to get the truck going.
As far as the intake wars are concerned Papadelogan brings up a good point, if you have the stock air box and a K&N drop in filter, it has been proven not to filter as well as some of the other mentioned options. (its not K&N's fault the air box was poorly designed and does not seal completley) now if you have a CONE type K&N filter you should be fine, they have proven to flow and filter as well as most others. The reason intakes was brought up is to help you make sure you don't "dust" a turbo. Dusting a turbo happens when raw unfilterd air and particles enter the intake flow and literaly sand blast the blades of your turbo, thus decreasing operating efficiency and causing a sometimes costly repair. A new tubo wheel is only 60-100 bucks but the time and P.I.T.A. factor is much greater.
I hope some of this helps.
Oh BTW
WELCOME TO FTE.
you will find great deals of information here, if you'll notice the 7.3l forum is one of the most heavily used forums for Ford Truck Enthusiasts.
