Question rough transmission shifting

hi, i have a 93 f250 4x4 ext cab 8ft bed, with a 7.3 liter diesel, with over 170,000 miles and still going strong. my transmission is shifting rough, and ivee been told that it was the shift control computer, and ive also been told to just change the trans fluid. any suggestions on how to make it shift smooth? does this mean the trans is on its last legs?

change the fluid and filter, maybe even get a complete flush done so you change out torque converter fluid too. Then if that doesn't help, we can delve into the electronics. No it doesn't mean that its on its last legs, but it is telling you it needs some maintenance.

where is the trans fluid filter located? and this is my daily driver, to and from school, work, etc, so i dont think i will be able to drop the trans right away to get at the torque converter until summer rolls in. how much work am i looking at to change all fluids and do i have to drop the trans to get to the torque converter?

you dont have to drop it, but you do have to spin it just right so that the drain plug is at the bottom. I dont remember how to re-fill it. Either way, the trans fluid filter is in the pan.. You have to drain the pan fluid and drop the pan to get to the filter. Maybe an hours work to change pan fluid and filter.

Can you explain the "shifting rough"? Does it feel like it is shifting mushy or is it slamming into gear like a drag car.

My 94 was shifting really, really hard a little bit ago I went under to look at the neutral safety switch and found to not be plugged in good. Just by wiggling the connector it seams to have fixed my problem. Something to look at anyway.
