If the truck has EFI, there should be a 3 or 4 wire connector coming out of the loom near where the TFI module connects. It may have gotten melted by the exhaust manifold.
It may be prudent to open up those looms that go to the rear on the right side of your engine to see if thats what happened.
Loading up is one symptom of a bad or disconnected O2 sensor. Pulling codes may help, but if it's not connected there should be some wire stubs or something near.
The O2 sensor on a 2.9l should have a 3-wire plug. There absolutely should be something connected to it, so search for burnt off wires, or a blank plug.
My 89 had o/bk, dg/p & bk/lg wires going to it. They ran in a bad place behind the engine, was easy to get caught between the engine and tranny if you were putting them back in the truck. Sorry I don't recall where they originated.
