The 4.6L has a higher speed torque converter. Makes it easier to leave lines of $ on the street. In my opinion, the torque converter behind the 5.4L is too tight. It should stall around 1800 to 2000 to get closer to peak torque when starting off with 7000# + in tow.

I've got the superchip micro tuner II for my 5.4 2001 f150 4x4..its easy to use 10 minutes or less, and you can change tire sizes, and tow packages, or performance, 97octane, or 87 octane mode or program back to stock in seconds..not sure about the horsepower but its noticible..most tuners need 93 octane or better, and gas is redickless high...coupled with a good air system and exhaust maybe 25 hp or better or worse.more torque for sure...My 5.4 seems to run good stock, But it does seem to be heat tempermental.. so i only use it when I want to play or tow something heavy..It seems to work well with higher octane gas..and Im a cheapo at times..good tuner..plugs into the obII as well..

humm good observation, so thats why the 4.6 97 expedition I have seems to get up pretty fast..I never taught of it But it makes since..My 5.4 F150 will only ripp up the rubber when its colder out..Im running completely stock except K&N exhaust..just got my new 57 series K&N filter..gotta get it installed with the superchip...cant wait..with the tunerII I can change shift points...hummmm.

My 97 with a 5.4 will light up both tires with no problem. It would do it stock. It will light them up now with my mods.

Wow the edge sounds like a good tuner so It stays pluged into the port..and does it give diagnostic codes as well..Ive got the superchips 1715 max micro tuner..its nice to have the diagnostic code reader..burntoughford, which cold air kit you got, i might do something to the wifes, 97 4x4 expedition 4.6er..and does the tuner help with milage..it gets 15 to 17mpg stock 97,000 plus miles...I,m not complaining..we use the hound outa it with the kids..love it..

I just got a cheap CAI on ebay... yet it reads and clears codes, i havent used it but its supposed to...plus it displays all kinds of info about he engine, as well as Instant MPG and Average MGP... 55 mph with no wind on a flat road i will see 19-20 mpg... 70 mph interstate its more like 15-17.. I saw some improvement with at 55 mph but not really much at 70 the wind makes alot of difference... But ya its really nice

Tuners are fun to mess around with, it took me about 5 differnt custom settings before I found the one I like. I had a superchips 1100 module that was install directly into the pcm, it seemed waaay to agressive with the shift pressure and shift points. At WOT it would rev past 5k and slam into 2nd gear causing the tires to chirp a little, sounded cool but just too harsh of shifting for my use.

yeah this one i have mess around with a lot . i have not had any problems with it slamming into any gears on any mode. you can custom toon this to any setting you want to. and you can set this one with a rev limiter and mess with thw wot, plus you can retrieve and clear all diagnostic codes. it does everything a superchip does and more. the newest one out is the sct. have not heard much about it but i would stay with edge i am very pleased with it

Ive been wanting 1 "programer" for a while but hadnt been near the top of my priorities list yet or mainly havent run up on a deal yet. I hate that slugess short shift from 1st to 2nd that it seems like it dont know what gear it wants to be in. That would be my 1st reason to get a programer.
