Bone yard 4.30 switch?

Do I ask for a ring and pinion gear? Is this one gear or 2? Are these the only parts I need? I can order an install kit from Randy's. Is this a good idea? My 3.73 is bound to have some value. I guess I could sell it on e-bay. Are they all the same or do I need to get one thst has the LSD? Thanks.

Whoa cowboy! Lots of questions there.

You can get the Ring and Pinion from a boneyard.

You ask for a ring gear & the pinion gear. 2 seperate gears. Dollars to doughnuts they won;t be pulled from a truck and you'll have to do it yourself. But...

If you can save some money and the gears are in good shape then, sure! it's a great idea. Gears aren't too terribly expensive, though. About $250, brand-new OEM.

I cannot imagine the 3.73 having much value at all. Maybe $50-75 for the guy who wants to try and save gas?? Especially with 100K on it.

I would say you could easily see a total bill of $1250 to change the gear set. Like Monsta said, you are most likely will have to pull the gears yourself out of the donar rearend assembly. And I would also bet that the only way a boneyard would let you do that is to a wrecked rearend, not a good complete unit.

If you are really going to replace just the gears, then go new. The installation rate will be the same and you will have the confidence of new gears.

I just got quoted $650 for my 2WD. Kinda steep if you ask me. I would say 4 hours labor is fair. So find a shop with a reasonable labor rate.

The figure I gave you was for a 4wd. As you can see by the estimate that Monsta received, it's very similar if you double his quote.

You have to remember that many shops, especially the dealers use a flat rate book. Yes, it should take 4 hours, but the book probably quotes 8 hours for the job. At $75 t $85 per hour, you will get a $600 - $700 per axle quote.
