Welcome aboard; I have one in mine from a 94 explorer; drum brakes; if you can get the e-brake cables and the e-brake pedal from the explorer. I have 3:55 and my 302/C4, if you don't have an overdrive you may need an AOD trans with the 3:73. The smart fols who calculate that stuff should be along soon.
My 53 has one also from a 94 explorer, yep get the E brake cables and pedal also. Only thing I had to do was weld spring perches on in correct location and had to fab some shock mounts and weld them to the axle. No big problems. Oh and you will need the U bolts off the explorer. I forget the actual size but I think the tube is 3 and a quarter or 3 and a half inches.
The 3.73 gearing is going to hand you some slow freeway speeds unless you have HUGE tires.
If you are driving with a direct drive (no overdrive) transmission, and tires with an 88" roll out (235/70R15s) you will have to drive at 2900 rpm to hit 65 mph and 3500 to hit 75. That's pretty high. You want to be at about 2300-2500 at that 65.
In order to do that you will need rear end gearing at 3.00 to 2.80. With a 20% overdrive you 3.73 would be perfect - 65 mph at 2400 rpm.
Here's the gear ratio calculator - use tire roll out distance - it's more accurate:
I have the same axle in my 49. I used spring hangers and springs from an 89 dodge dakota width wise its a nice fit, I still haven't set my ride hieght yet but i'm staying somewhat low to the ground. I reverse the rear hangers to help lower it and to help with a severe pinion angle(because of using the Dakota hardware) there are some pics in my album..I am using an AOD tranny
