So I've decided to lift my 05 350 and put on 37 toyos. Now I need help with gears. According to Randy ring and pinion, I need to change to a 4.11 gear. I've hear some aftermarket gears whine and aren't as good as stock gears. Ford prices are crazy. I was hoping some one could point me in the right direction.
I would call up one of the OEM parts sponsors here and see what they can do for you as far as getting stock 4.10's. I regeared with OEM but have heard good things about Yukon gears.
If you do a lot of heavy towing or think you possibly want taller tires in the future, you may want to consider 4.30 gears. The Yukon rears are very popular and I would think that if they were of poor quality, it would be reflected in their popularity. I plan to use Yukon gears when I lift my F350.
my 350 has 4.30s and thinking on going up to 488 or taller would consider selling mine . i have 33 thou on mine and seem to be in perfect condition . ive went with 35 toyos and think i need a steeper gear for sure ill see soon enough .

Diesel engine, 35" tires, and 4.88 gears... Ha! I bet it will be a "hell of a ride" in your Super Duty!
4:30 for sure.. even figuring in the diesel engine..
going to 4:10s wont be enuf of a jump to offset those huge 37"s tires..
When I was considering 37" tires, I was looking at 4.88 gears for my 5.4L engine. Now that I'm going with 40" tires, I'm looking at 5.38 gears. The 5.4L is very sensitive to low RPM's but has great power above 2,500 RPM's.
Your '05 has what, 3.73? So, 4.10/4.11 would only be about a 10% gain. If you're going to a 37" tire over stock, which was what 31" or so? You're going up in tire size about 20%, and overall the tire is not just taller at 37" but also heavier. So, I'd try for a 25% (or so) increase in gearing. 3.73, plus 25% is what, about 4.56? I'd go to 4.56 if you like where your current RPMs and power band is. If you are planning to tow heavy you might try 4.88, but remember the power drops significantly with the diesel once you hit a certain RPM. Going lower isn't always better, unless you know you won't be going more than 55mph towing. I think, and it's just my opinion, that you'll be well served with 4.56.
When I talked to Randy's ring and pinion, they told me if I go to 4.10s (really 4.11) it would put the engine and transmission bacrk to stock rpms. I might go with the 4.30s but would going any lower will kill on the highway when not towing? Ford wants 700 for the rear gears and 400 for the fronts. With those prices the lift/tires might have to wait.
