Question Brake problem/concern

I have a 2000 v10. Had a brake job done a few months ago, meaning new rotors and pads. The brakes work, but there is a strange sound occurring when stopping while towing. I tow a boat with hydralic brakes, a camper with electric brakes, and a utility trailer that has no brakes. Regardless of which one I tow, the same thing happens. Also, all these have varying weights from 600 lbs to 9000 lbs. What is happening is that as I am stopping, at some point as I apply pressure, I hear a noise and feel a sort of thump/rumble. It feels like it is happening on the drivers side front tire. The brakes do work, there is just this noise. It is not a grind, it is hard to describe, but reminds me of what plumbing sounds like in the house if there is air in the lines, sounds like a value is hanging or something. The noise happens quickly and is gone. It happens one time, every time I stop. I am going to take it back, but would like to be able to better describe what is happening. This does not ever happen unless I am towing. I have also felt of the wheel and it does not feel hot. Any ideas out there. Thank you for your help.

Sounds like you drawbar is shifting when you brake. Try a different drawbar (hitch) or pin and make sure the ball is tight. I would also check the actual receiver bolts for tightness.

I use different hitches for my various trailers. The drawbar hitch for the trailer is different than my boat or utility trailer. It is a weight distribution hitch. I am using the OEM receiver for all of the trailers that I am pulling. I have checked to make sure it is tight to the frame.

Other ideas? Thanks.

That first one was a WAG!

Your truck a 2x4 or 4x4?

It is a 4X4. I did notice today that it does not do this when stopping frequently. It seems like I need to go a few miles between stops, then it will happen. My 16 year old said it sounded like air being forced out of something to him. He also agreed that it sounds to be coming from the driver side, around the front tire area. I am wondering if it could be coming from the master cylinder area.

I do have an appointment on Monday. They asked me to bring it hooked up to one of the trailers so they can hear what I am hearing.

So I'm driving today and I'm thinking about this thread... (odd, huh?)

All I can think of it the ABS might be activating on that one wheel.

While reading through the posts, I was going to suggest what Monsta did. Another thing it could be is the ABS pump/motor, which if I recall correctly is in the front left under the hood near the wheel well.

If the techs bleed the system, or did not correctly push back the calipers before replacing the pads. It may cause the ABS pump/motor to make a noise.

ABS could be the problem. That may explain why the noise is happening in one place. We had snow and ice a couple of weeks ago and I did some testing and the ABS appears to be working. It is just strange to me that I never hear anything unless I am towing something. It could be that the extra weight regardless of the trailer is just enough to create an issue. The brakes are stock.

are the trailer brakes adjusted too loose. that would cause a very heavy pedal effort and maybe enough to activate the abs. i would try setting the brake controller a little higher and see what that does.

I have the same model and year truck and i had a problem with the brakes that when you pressed on the brakes, the steering wheel would literally jerk out of your hands it pulled so hard. The techs redid the pads about four times, and the fifth time, they realized that they were putting the pads on backwards. Now, I havent had a problem for over a few months.

Went for a test drive with the mechanic and we could not recreate the brake noise. He suggested it could be some friction noise that is heard when there is a heavy load, but my utility trailer with my riding lawnmower in it could not recreate the noise. We tried real hard, but it would not grunt. I am not real worried because the thing drives fine, I just hear this noise when stopping with my boat trailer or camper. On a separate note, the mechanic did notice my steering wheel was sloppy and not coming back to center. He did some poking around on the steering box and found there was too much play in the gears. I had about two inches of play either way. So they replaced the box for me and man oh man what a difference. This thing is now real tight. There is no wandering, or loose feel anymore. It is much easier to drive now.
