Just bought a new 5th wheel that weighs in at 13,000 lbs and now need a new truck. Narrowed it down to an F-250SD deisel. I will be towing it in the Colorado mountains, somtimes up to 12 or 13,000 ft. I can get a new '07, 6.0 $8,000 cheaper than an '08 6.4. The '08 has 25 HP and 80 ft lbs of torque more than the '07. Is it worth $8K more?
I'd say not only no, but hell no. Pretty sure you can pick up that extra hp in the aftermarket for less than $8k if that's all your worried about. Plus, IMO the '08's are Fugly.
Well basically its up to you which one do you prefer in looks drivability comfort and all that and do you think its worth to spend that much more on the 08 or instead just buy a 07 and you could mod it for less than that like marcs724 said or even just leave it the 07s are still built to haul *** good luck deciding
I've been pulling my 16,000 lb 5er here in Colorado with my 05 without trouble. No performance mods yet. Been over some high mountain passes and all over the mountains without issue. The 6.0 is plenty....Brian
if I was in your shoes .. I'd buy the 07 in a heartbeat over an 08 (sorry about the heartbeat comment) .. plus dealers are really dealing to move the 07's right now .. and the 6.0L in the 07's are solid
IMHO...go with the '08. The all new 6.4L PSD is a marvel for sure, but that is not the only reason. But the '08 has a better upgraded interior...and the suspension drives much better than the '07 and older SD's. Has to do with the longer rear leaf springs out back. Same or more capacity with a smoother ride. The tailgate step is pretty cool too! Plus depending on package options...You could get the all new traction control feature. The integrated trailer brake booster is said to be improved.
The '07 6.0L PSD has had less issues than the older 6.0L PSD versions, but the engine is still not a valid performer based on its record. To issues come to mind: poor quality turbo and EGT valve. Also...if you are going to work it, the 6.0L PSD has been know to over-heat and that leads to blown head gaskets. The over-heat issue is evident when you look at all the cooling the NEW 6.4L PSD has...FORD recognized the flaw...and is said to have corrected it with the NEW PSD.
OBTW: If you add a tuner, then just KISS your warranty good bye! That is just about the biggest mistake folks that "work" their 6.0L PSD...and then when it fails...FORD denies it and will not fix. Just keep in mind...
Good luck on whatever you decide...and DO report back.

Thanks,
I thought long and hard before I made the decision. I drove both the 08 and 07 comparing them side by side. 08 is quieter at idle but engine highway noise is the same. You sit a bit more forward in the 08. Power wsie I couldn't tell much difference. Seemed the 08 was a little better out of the hole but on the road it was a wash. The 6.0 has had the bugs worked out of it but the 6.4 is being produced by a company that Ford is sueing so am wondering about the quality of the 6.4. The big 2" high."SUPERDUTY" stamped into the cheap plastic dash of the 08 was a big turn off for me. I mean the SD is a great truck but I don't need"SUPERDUTY" in my face not only on the grill but tailgate and the dash as well! Then there is the 8 thousand dollar savings on the 07. I went with the 07. There just wasn't 8K worth of inprovement in the 08 for me to plunk dowen another 8 thousand hard earned dollars!
Good luck
Most of the 6.4 changes to the block have already been designed into the 6.0 after Jan '06, I believe. Have heard of better head gaskets and bolts. Thats why I'm looking for an '07, but they are getting scarce.
Thanks for all the replies! Based upon the majority of opinions, I think will go with the '07 and save $8k.
Good luck Rich, the ones with all the good stuff on them are few and far between. People were snappin them up like crazy. I got a CC Lariet, towcommand, moonroof, 6cd, heated seats, chrome package, 20" wheels, hitch, upliffter switches, power rear window, and various other odds and ends like high output alternator, etc. When I finally found one with the options and color I wanted it was 450 miles away.
Let me know what you end up gettin
I think the 07 will be a classic ,At the time I remember how much "better" the 1980 trucks were over the 79 model, Not. Sometimes new is not allways better. The 05-07 is timeless like the 78-79. just my .02 cents
I would go with an 08' why would want to pay for a brand new truck for 5 or more years when it's not the new style even when you buy it? I think in a couple of years you will be kicking yourself and wishinf you had the current style. In a couple of years when they make a suttle change or two, you will be two styles behind not just one. I guess that doesn't matter if you only keep your truck for a couple of years anyway, but I like to keep my trucks for awhile. I think the new sd has a great look, and the interior is awsome. An 08' would my choice. I would not be worried about the motor it has a good warranty.

I keep trucks for about ten years. I was afraid of the 08 because of Fords lawsuit with ITN. And yes, the warranty is good, that is if Ford is around to honor it. Don't forget they are in dire straights right now financially. I drove both before I decided and didn't care for the new interior. the ac vents are an improvement but the big, SUPERDUTY, stamped on the dash isnt or the cheap looking plastics used through out. Because I keep trucks along time I went for the proven engine. Keep in mind the 08 is basically the same truck as the 07, even the engine, just a larger bore and emission controls. Remember the problems we had when the first emission controls came out on the gassers? Best to wait for a couple of years then buy the new technology. Also, the new engine will be trashed if it gets any high sulfur D while the 6.0 will just slurp it up and keep going.
