I have an 02 F250 which I recently put a 4" Lift and 35"x 17" tires. I know I need a new drop down hitch but the question is how much of a drop do I now need. Anyone have any ideas.
i guess it depends on what your trailer is... ie how tall the toungue is. can't just say a # 'cause their are different sizes per different types of trailers
Get yourself a hitch like the B&W stow and go. You can buy them in 6, 8 and 10 inch models (the number being the maxium drop). They also come in 3 varietys... a dual 1 7/8"-2", a dual 2"-2 5/16" or a triple 1 7/8"-2"-2 5/16".
These things are the cats meow. you slide it into your receiver like a normal hitch. to rotate to your desired ball size you remove the pin, rotate the ball assembly and reinstall the pin. To adjust the height you remove two pins, slide it up or down to desired height and install the pins.
When you are done towing, you can flip the whole assembly up under your bumper and eliminate the banged up shins.
I bought my 8" drop, dual (2"x2 5/16") at my local 6 Robbles for about $140.
Depending on the model you buy and where expect to pay any where between $100 and $350. They are well worth the money!!
Here's a link to give you an idea.. http://www.freewaytrailer.com/adjust...all-mounts.asp
Basic figure is the bottom of the ball should be about 18" off the ground. That is not a golden number though. Back your truck up to the trailer, make the trailer level then measure from the inside top of the hitch to the bottom of the trailer tounge.
That Rapid Hitch is a good lookin' ball mount; unfortunately, I saw one break last August when a lifted Excursion diesel was trying to pull a 32' go-fast boat with twin Merc 454's and a triple-axle trailer out of our local Site 6 ramp. The slider was all the way down and the vertical part broke at the highest adjustment notch; when it let go, the swedges on both safety cables tore loose! The trophy blonde sitting at the helm was quick enough to get one engine lit off, and she held the rig steady until another TV could hook up and get her out; quick thinking! It's very possible the hitch and ball mount were overloaded.
