Vibration Fixes

How many people had their vibration problem fixed with a driveshaft replacement? Ford has one on order for me but I don't think it will help. They have already indexed the tires, (twice) and installed that stupid damper to no avail.

Check under the TSB's section for 2005 for the parking brake TSB. That could be your issue, driveshaft did not fix mine. The parking brake lever may be rusted, and seized on causing the vibration. That was the cause of mine.

A driveshaft vibration will be about 3.5 times faster than the wheels, like a shudder. Most any mechanic could rule out (or rule in) the driveline pretty quick. Quite often it's actually the tires, not the balance. One way to prove this is to inflate the tires one at a time to about 50 psi, driving the truck at the speed it usually vibrates to see if it gets worse. After each trial, be sure to let the extra air out of the tire. This will also identify which tire(s) are the problem. I notice on my new F-150 with Hankook tires, it does a little shimmy on cold tires around 50MPH, but it's smooth as silk on the freeway, up to 85MPH, which is the fastest I've driven it. The owner's manual mentions a possible vibration from the tires until fully warmed up. You could try to get them to send it to a tire shop that can do a 'force balance' which will find any tire or wheel problems. BTW, what tire pressure are you running?

will a tsb apply to other years? mine is a 2006 lariat screw 4x4. I bought it in october and now have 2300 miles on it. I have already have had it in the shop three times, once for (800 miles) transmission and vibration and twice just for vibration.

This is my fifth Ford and never had I had problems like this. I wish I had came to this site before I traded in my 2002 screw it was 100% problem free. (except for cruise recall)

I have the bf goodrich rugged trails on 18" wheels. I run the tires at the pressure on the door jam. Dealer swears its not the tires but I don't think they know what they are talking about. The vibration I have becomes noticable around 40-45 mph and never goes away unless I slow down. I have also noticed if i look out the drivers mirror it looks like the bed is bouncing, but I think it is just the vibration of the mirror. By the way the vibration is felt in the sterring wheel, pedals, floor board, and the seats there is no escape.

Really sounds like the parking brake to me. Thats the EXACT speed where I got it. It may or may not apply, but they did it on my 04 and it's fixed. I had to tell them what to fix after I did all the seaching and crawling under the truck to find the parking brake levers stuck on.

mine had the same exact issues... i had the dealer remove all tires, re-check the balance, and they found a clump of dried mud inside the rear drivers wheel. cleaned them all out, and bingo, drives like new ever since !!!

I have an 06 screw lariat 4x4 with the BF Goodrich AT's on it. At 400 mile, I took it to the Ford dealership I bought it from because of vibrations. The speed was identical to yours. I also could see the bed vibrating in the mirror. BTW, it is the bed shimying, not just the mirror. Anyways, they did the tire balance/index thing with them, (I told them about the TSB on it and they mentioned they did the procedures associated with it) and I still have the shimmy, however, it is only when the tires are cold. After the tires warm up, the shimmy goes away. Not sure if I am going to take it in again or not.

Thanks for the info, if the vibration goes away after tire warm up I will be happy cause I plan on changing out the crap tires anyway. But, if truck continues to vibrate then it stays stock and I will consider other actions if they can't fix it to my satisfaction.

Got my truck back after they had it 3 weeks. All they did was change the brake cable and an oil change. The driveshaft was what the Ford rep told them to do so now I am taking it back again. By the way no change in vibration.

306, mine does the same thing....when they warm up they're fine. I have the Generals(***** TIRES). I had mine balanced on a Hunter Tire Machine out of my ownpocket, and I still get the same shimmy. I am really starting to believe that it is something in the steering rack. Think about this, our trucks have prety much the same double wishbone setup as the 97-03 models, minus one thing, 97-03 used torsion bars, 04-up uses coil over shock's. 97-03 also used the pitman arm draglink steering, 04-up uses a new power steering rack. I never had an issue with my 97. Once they started using this power steering rack in the new 04's, THAT is when we all started getting these problems with shimmy, Like I posted before, My rack has a BB revision on it, so they must have revised something on them. For anyone that DOES NOT have any shimmy's, crawl under your truck and post what rack # you have, maybe we can start eliminating some causes here.
Thanks

I had the shimmy since new. Dealer had installed after market rims that sit further out that stock. Thought that was the problem. Tried the road force, and all the other stuff. I was going to replace the rims but wife liked them too much. Bit the bullet at 30,000 miles and put Micheline Pilot LT's all around. When I went to pick the truck up the tire dealer, who had spent hours tryin g to fix the shake, said I wouldn't believe how it rides. No shimmy. bounce or shake at all, gone!!! Took care of my problem and the ride is excellent.

I've gotten the shudder on my 04 SC FX4 probably twice. Both times I stopped and put in reverse and went forward again and it stopped. It happens to me when going 40-45 mph. It feels like when you get ice build-up undernear the truck, if any of you have experienced that.

jgatlin1, Your issue sounds like the rear parking brake pads hanging up. sounds like that may be the cause, when you back up, they actually retract a little. There is a TSB out about this.
