Last night we had about 3" of rain. When I got home from work at midnight I was turning around out in our field and pretty much sunk down in the mud. Went to 4 Hi and nothing happened. Then to 4 Lo and also nothing. (yes I did put it in neutral) I was able to rock it out and get back on the road. Needless to say I was not happy. I have used the 4x4 numerous times with no problem. This morning on the way to work I went by the carwash and cleaned the mud off the undercarriage and when I put it in 4x4 it worked again. I have not crawled under it yet but aside from the obvious lose connection have any of ya'll experienced this and what was the cause. The only other thing I can think of is a short. Any ideas? Thanks. goldendually
Forgot to tell ya'll it is a 2006 F150 FX4 with 7500 miles.
yes happened to me yesterday in my driveway actually, backed off of it and nearly got stranded, 4wheel did nothing.. then it worked fine 30 mins later.
Same thing happened to me about a year ago with my '05 SCAB. I took it to the dealer and there was a code in the computer saying that the shift motor on the transfer case had failed. They replaced the shift motor and I've had no problems with the 4x4 since.
Someone has posted before that "exercising" the transfer case shift motor by engaging 4wd once or twice a month will keep it operating normally when you need it to operate.
It seems like the same thread had the advice to tap on the motor while trying to engage 4wd to get it running again too. It evidently gets stuck and can be popped free by busting it up side the head a time or two. Not exactly something you can do by yourself with mud halfway up to the frame.
