I have an '87 F-150 with the 4.9L six. Recently I've been experiencing a ticking noise from underhood. Listening further it sounds as if it is a pulley in the location of the ac compressor, belt tensioner, and/or steering pump area. I don't think it's a lifter or anything deep within the engine. Any guesses or common problems that might cause this. It is louder when the engine is warm. Thanks.
Here is what I do to isolate these types of noises. Use your own judgement on what you want to do...
Carefully - use a loooong handled screwdriver as a stethoscope. Put the blade on the housing of the compressor, mounting base of pulley, etc, and hold the handle to your ear.
Tips -
Make a circle with your thumb and finger as a cushion between your ear and the handle.
NO jewelry or loose sleeves, etc that can get caught in moving engine parts.
