I need to replace the motor for my rear window. I looked in my haynes manual but it doesn't go to far in depth on the swap. It does say you got to watch the spring loaded mechanisms. What do I need to do to replace this motor without losing a finger or hand?
well, there's a lot to be aware of. First, you must do it all from inside the cargo area since the window must be up to reach the motor. I'm 6'4" tall so that was quite interesting. Second, the motor isn't easy to reach and is in an awkward position for your arms to get to, so be creative and don't expect to be able to see much of what you're doing. Regarding the spring-loaded track, my manual warned of this too, so I just wedged a small piece of wood between the inside bottom of the tailgate and the lifting arm (sort of like a jack stand on a car) to prevent any movement or appendage removal. It is fairly easy once you get the idea of what the setup looks like (feels like) and i believe there are only three (3) bolts to remove if I remember correctly. Good luck!

P.S. My truck's an '89, so depending on your year it might be slightly different, i don't really know.
i did mine and i had no idea what they were talking about. All i did it put the tailgate down removed the access panel found the motor, unbolted it and put the new one in and that was it. and i still have all my fingers and both hands. Just to be safe i put a small piece of wood against the gears so it wouldnt close i guess. but it was a 45min job. good luck
I just did this....forget the part about crawling aorund in the cargo area...support the window with the tailgate down. you can put the window up with the gate down if you push the driver's side latch closed then activate the ket or the dashboard switch. Have an extra pair of hands to support the window as it emerges from the tailgate and with the access panel removed you can reach into the gate easily and unbolt the motor from the window brackets and the bracket from the gate. (If the window has never been replaced, depending on the year, the window mounting brackets may be pop riveted in place and you will have to drill them out if you want to get the window completely out of the way. 1/4-20 x 3/4" bolts and nuts will replace the poprivets easily)
Have someone extend the window when gate is lowered - (with latch closed) and support it with a stool and foam or something of correct height - but remember, the window will curve upwards when extended so have extra shims ready, you lose your grip, you might lose your window.
