Might be a stupid question, but front tires rattle a bit. At a stand still I can move the tire back and forth (in towards the engine and back). Torqued all lugs, but still moves...ball joints bad?
If you are moving the top of the wheel in and out, you have either a bad upper ball joint, or a bad upper control arm bushing, unless it's twin I-beam suspension.
Top to bottom movement is ball joints - either lower, or upper (which might be part of the upper control arm for your vehicle). Just replaced both Driver and Passenger sides top and bottom this weekend on my wifes '01 Expedition. It has 106k miles.
If the bearing play is in tolerance, then indeed, the suspension could be suspect. A wheel that moves somewhat easily (without pry bars) straight out from the spindle usually indicates improper bearing adjustment. However a ball joint that's ready to fall out might also move as easily. I see you mentioned a "rattle". Are the brake pads shaking in their mounts? Is the brake hardware absolutely corrcect? Is the caliper funtioning properly?
