Just a couple quick ?s

I'm new to the f100s and I am going next Fri. to look at a '56 and I'm hopefully going to buy it. I have a few questions about the f100s in general. Sorry for the ignorant ?s but I am just now learing about these trucks. I have had a 68 camaro, a 93 turbo'ed 532rwhp mustang, and a couple more toys in the past few yrs. but I have to say that I am more excited about getting this truck than any of the others. I just think the '56 is the best looking truck out to date.

What year did the 12v become stock opposed to 6v?

The truck that I am looking at has the filler neck on the driver side of the cab, I can't find any pics with other '56 with the same filler neck location. Is this a stock location? Here is a pic.

I here people refering to their truck as being a big window or small window, is this decided by the year of the truck, factory option, diffence in models, or ????

One last question, I hear guys referring to their trucks as an effie. What exactly is this and are effie's only certain yrs? I guess what I am asking is what makes your truck and effie and what doesn't.

Thanks Dustin

Hi and welcome

1956 was the first year for 12 volt, the filler neck is on the passenger side unless this was/is right hand drive. The big window was a factory option, the one in the picture is a small window. I have no idea why they started calling these trucks effie. I have a 56 also in fact this is the 3rd one and it's a keeper.

First year for 12 volt = 1956. Big window refers to a wrap around back glass. It was available as an option whether the truck was a Custom Cab or not. Big Windows featured chrome trim outlining the glass, and when factory ordered, the windshield also got the outline chrome trim to match the rear.

So with that said, this truck that I am looking/picking up was an original right hand drive truck? So what yr. range are the "effies"?

Thanks for the great answers so far!

Gas tank went into the cab in 1956, on the 1953/55's it was under the truck, mounted to the frame.

Someone posted a pic of a 56 recently he was looking at, there had been a filler neck mounted on the left upper side of the cab. Didn't look right, but there it was, just the same.

I'll take a stab at your "effie" question.

The "effie" is short for the "F", as in "F-1" or "F-100" or any other rating the truck may be. Ford first used the "F" designation begining with the 48 model year, I think. "Effie" is just a way to identify it as an old Ford truck.

If you are in the northern US or Canada, there are Mercury trucks up there that are generally the same as the Ford counterparts, with the exception of some trim differences. Nathan calls his an "emmie" since their designations begin with "M".

Hope this helps,

Effie

Thanks for the explanation I wasn't sure what effie meant.
Thought it would come up one day.

one other explanation for the filler neck not being behind the drivers door ??

Previous owner moved tank to rear of vehicle and "patched" the hole in the cab corner... happens all the time... now , if it's a bone stock truck... it's probably right hand

Here is a quick run down and thread that talks about the truck nick names:

current slang terms
53-56 "Effies", fat-fenders
57-60 "fridges"
61-66 "Slick 60's"
67-72 "bumpsides"

Well, I'm confused. Picture in the books shows 1956 with the filler pipe on the right side of the cab. But several days ago, someone posted pics of two trucks he was interested in buying. One was a red 56 F100, the other was a blue 53. The red 56 had a filler plug in the left side of the cab, just up and behind the door handle.

That was me that posted the two trucks that I was interested in and I decided on the red '56 instead of the blue '55. So the pics of the truck in my original post in this thread is of the truck that was mention in my previous thread.

So is it certain that if the filler neck is on the driver's side then it WAS a right hand drive?

M-series trucks are Not right-hand drives, as Canadians drive on the Same side of the street/hwy as we do here in the states, so they are left-hand drive trucks.
