Waste Gate

I know the test is easy ( vacuum pump. 5 psi ) but, is there a tell tale sound to a bad waste gate? I seem to have exceesive exhaust noise when stepping hard on the pedal. I have found no exhaust leaks. 1999 7.3 PSD

You can't hear the wastegate open, so there is really no sound that you can listen for. Also 5 psi of pressure on the actuator will begin to open just about any stock wastegate (unless you have adjusted it tighter than normal). Other than that, the only ways to tell that your wastegate is opening prematurely is lower boost/high egt's (similar to a boost or exhaust leak), or if it's really bad, grabbing the actuator rod and moving it back and forth.

If you do have excessive noise, that can be heard when the exhaust backpressure valve (EBPV) begins to close up. Again you would suffer from significant loss in power, low boost, and depending on how much the valve is closing, you could have extremely high egt's.

Do you have any gauges on your truck to monitor what's going on?

No gauges as of yet. So I should be looking at the exhaust backpressure valve? There is a difference in power from when I first bought the truck, but it has been a oncoming thing, it wasnt overnight.

Without gauges or any scan tool it's going to be tougher to really figure out what's going on.

A quick check of the EBPV is to look at the housing on the turbine side of the turbo. There you'll see underneath the actuator rod that connects to the butterfly valve. That lever where the rod connects should be pointing towards the driver's side firewall, almost like it's pointing at the driver's seat. That means the valve is completely open. In cold weather, the rod extends and the lever moves towards the passenger's side fenderwell. Drive your truck until it completely warms up, then pop the hood and while it's still running, check the position of the lever and arm and see if it's trying to close. If it is, you may have a bad engine oil temp sensor. If it's wide open, then you have a different problem.

BTW, how long have you owned the truck?

Went out and found the valve, must admit, I was looking in the wrong spot originally. With it warm, it is pointing at the drivers seat, just waiting for it to cool down now. Pulled out my actron OBD 2 scanner, wouldnt pull up anything usefull on the truck. Seems to only scan for gas engines.

disconnected the two wires the motor that control the ebpv, no difference, except it doesnt like the cold. So, next, where can I purchases a OBD2 for a diesel truck? My Actron will not read live data.
