Jack up the rear end, put on jack stands. Place transmission in nuetral. Turn one of the wheels by hand. If the other turns the opposite direction it is an open differential. If they both spin the same direction it is a limited slip. There are more fun ways to check:
Jack up one side and try to drive off. If you can't it is an open differential.

Cross-reference the door tag with the tech sticky on this forum. Axle codes can be found there.

Before people swap out their factory limited slip, I would first drain the diff and refill with your favorite gear oil and only 2 oz of friction modifier to start with. Add friction modifier in 2 oz increments until you no longer have clatter, but you have the limited slip action you like. Several people have reported being happy with only 2 to 4 oz of modifier as apposed to the 8 oz that Ford puts in from the factory. Mine worked fine from the factory, but ended up putting a Truetrac in after a bearing went bad in the diff and ate up the LS and gears. I like the Truetrac better than the stock LS, but the stock LS is not bad. The stock LS served me well all of these years plowing and I would still have it in my truck if the clutch pack hadn't been eaten up by that bearing.

bronco521 - yeah I have heard that. Results seem to vary for people. Mine worked perfectly from the factory whereas others like you can't get them to work no matter what you do. Even though mine worked great from the factory, the Truetrac was a step up and locks up very positive. No clatter or chirping whatsoever. I just figured it was best to let people to know that a fluid change could be all that they need instead of swapping out their LS.

As Ronin, I'm very happy with my Tru-trac, worth every penny. I took my truck to the dealer early on and complained about the lack of hook up. They put MORE anti-friction fluid in it.!!!!
