dieselsite coolant filter system
i am done with my dieselsite coolant filter system install with ball vavles, took about a hour and a half for me to do it, very simple to install, i used teflon tape and pipe dope at every threaded connection just to be extra sure of no leaks, which there were none, how do u know when the filter is clogged? do u know when u touch the filter and it is cold, meaning u have no flow thru the filter? is this the only way to know when the filter is clogged? also i lost some coolant when i cut the big line, so made a trip to the dealer for some of that motorcraft gold coolant, they say this is the only coolant that shoul be in the powerstroke system, no green or orange, this is what the diesel tech told me at ford today...........i will start on my guages install next.
I did mine, it was about 45 minutes. The longest part was cutting the heater core hose near the oil fill pipe. I just used a steak knife....and was careful. I'm on my 3rd filter, I cut open the first one, it was full of sand, and slime. I didn't cut open the second one though. I changed the first one after 6 weeks, the second one was 3 months.
I was on the fence too, till I read that the sand eats away at the water pump, and the pump is $500.00 to repair. I don't remember where I got that number, but I purchased mine shortly after learning those numbers, and I will put one in my next truck as well.
I know first had that there is a load of crap in the system of a new 6.0. I had so much stuff that it turned the inside of my overflow dark brown in less that 100 miles off the lot, brand new. Had the dealer do a full flush, and had one done again @ 30,000 mi. I didn’t know I have a coolant bypass option. I am installing one. Oh, my Overflow is still rust brown.
has anyone had this coolant system start leaking at any of the connections? did anyone loose alot of coolant like i did when i cut the upper heater hose? i had to add some of that high dollar motorcraft gold antifreeze to my sytem with a little water.
I lost about a Quart or two of Coolant, I bought the new gallon before so I was ready for ir. You can drain the radiator before cutting the hose and avoid that but no big deal. I had a slight drip at the small hose coming out of the radiator after the install.A quick retighten of the clamp and it stopped. I sugest a few days after the install just open the hood and check all the connections. Also make sure to use the teflon tapes on the threaded connections.
I opened up my system at the bottom of the radiator and drained some out before i started the install. i think I took about a gallon or so out, and when i cut the hoses, i had minimal leakage. mine's not low and i never had to add any. i saved it in a clean gallon jug and put it back in when finished. i'm changing my first filter today.
southbound, i've had zero leaks at all from any of the fittings. i used the teflon tape, not the liquid kind, on all the threaded fittings, obviously, you don't need it on the barbed fittings with clamps.
i'm anxious to see what the inside of my filter looks like.
