E350 transmission problem

E350 transmission problem

1994 E350 with a E40D transmission. Problem: will not shift from second to drive or overdrive most of the time. However, some of the time it shifts correctly. The yellow light on the gear shifter is on sometime and sometimes it is off. What is the problem?

Hi allen, welcome to FTE.

The E4OD is controlled by a computer. I would start by seeing if there are any error codes stored, then go from there.

aTransmission shop says there is nothing electronically wrong with it, but if nothing is wrong, why would the light be flashing. Tried using scanner; it would go so far and give no information. I have a nemesys scanner, but cannot receive any information out of it. Don't know what to do now. I know for a fact that there has been at least three transmissions; vehicle has 160,000 miles. What would cause a minimum of three transmissions to go bad on this vehicle?
