Need help with Transmission

I recently bought a 1987 LTD w/ a 302 and need to ID tranz, and possible replacement transmissions... Was ford even still using a C4 in the '87 LTD?
How do I tell if I have the C4, C6, or E4OD... I have overdrive on my column so do I have the E4OD?

I've only found this one pdf that even remotely helps me ID the trans...

http://www.bmracing.com/media/catalog/6.pdf

My pan looks nothing like the E4OD pan in the picture! It looks like the C4 pan!

But most places I look are telling me they wern't even using the C4 on the LTD in 1987!

I assume it is entirely possible someone replaced it... the shifter is slightly off (IE when half a click up from park I am in rev, when in rev I am in N and when in N I am apparently in OD (which is where I am having most slippage issues) OD I assume is D...

Please email or call me directly if you have any clue about this...

1987 = AOD. To preserve it...STAY out of O/D in heavy traffic. AOD was the only transmission offered.

E4OD came later.

Transmission indicator controlled by a cable. It's part of the indicator and is binding or stretched.

Question AOD vs C4 / C6

Thanks numberdumby... I figured that out sometime between when I placed the thread and this afternoon...

From everything I have read it is my humble opinion that all things considered this is probably the best choice for the LTD Ford could have made, and it should work great for me. The AOD seems to be a healthy balance of technology, but not too much technology, a great place for me to learn more about transmissions.

I do have somewhat of a mechanical back ground. I was a tractor trailer mechanic for about three years; I never got to do much really, really in depth stuff, so this sounds fun. I did go ahead and buy the Chilton's just incase!

Does anyone have any warnings, tech tips or suggestions about rebuilding an AOD transmission to Semi-OEM spec? I am thinking I want the standard kit offered at the black and orange auto parts store, a shift kit (kick it up just a lil’ notch) and more than likely go ahead and replace the torque converter while I got the tranny off of there… I am guessing around a three day project….

What is your take? should I go ahead and rebuild it or should I simply do the standard 100k transmission service (R&R The fluid, and the screen and adjust the bands as directed by Chilten's?)

I don't think you can adjust the bands on a AOD, only the C4 or C6 I believe.

get a 3" kevlar od band, run a remote tranny filter and upgrade the cooler this will help the tranny big time. stay out of od when traveling under 55-60 mph. the transgo shift kit is a good option.

I read in the chilten's how to adjust the bands do you think it is worth a go before I invest so much time and money? I guess I am going to wind up doing it anyway,... I just dont want to totaly tear up the transmission before I can rebuild it... I desperatly want to make this thing a "sleeper" AKA looks like an grandpa car that HAULS BUTT! while maintaining some fuel economy....
