Sometime back I contacted Royal Purple and they confirmed that their oil is a Group IV and Group V mixture of synthetics. They also stated that a CJ4 oil may be better than a CI4+ oil when you are comparing mineral grade oils due to the better base stock in the CJ4 oil. HOWEVER, the CJ4 oil (in 2006 and earlier) does not offer any advantages over Royal Purple due to the superior base stock in RP - especially for shear stability.

I also read on BITOG Forum (Bob Is The Oil Guy) that the BEST oil for high temperature shear protection in the 6.0L is the Red Line oil. the question is - how much is really needed if you change the oil at 5000 - 6000 miles???

13.5 qts Royal Purple - apprx $85.
13.5 qts Red Line - apprx $115
13.5 qts of Mobil 1 diesel oil - apprx $80 (might find it a little cheaper)

I use Royal purple and their 15W40 has all the certifications including t CI-4 plus and "MEETS DDC POWERGUARD 93K214 AND CUMMINS 20078 REQUIREMENTS".

From all the research I read on it, its the best oil out there. http://www.royalpurple.com/video/video.html

Question

Well I am sold on Royal Purple. Now if there was only a synthetic version of Mercon SP I would sold on it also. I can't believe there is only Ford's Mercon SP on the market and no one else makes it or a synthetic version. It just boggles the mind.

I believe Mercon SP is synthetic. That's why it's so expensive.

As far as the RP. Good stuff. Just too expensive for me to justify.

Mercon SP is synthetic. However, Ford has not released licenses to market it on the secondary market. I was told that they are changing to something else anyway, so it would not be profitable to produce a replacement for a third party. We don't have it as bad as the Dmax guys with those Ally's. They have the same situation buying only Allisons fluid and it is expensive.

This is a typical nonresponsive answer that OTHER companies get lambashed for. The bottom line is that since they lost in court to Castrol, they have decided they too must join the deception party in order to maximize profits. Sell a Group III as a pure syn. Just because the courts say so doesn't make it real.
