In the Haynes manual it says you got to replace the drain plug in the torque converter? Do you have to and if so can you change the tranny fluid and then drain the torque converter later.?
Not all our trucks have a convertor drain plug AFAIK. If it does, I would drain it at the same time and reuse the plug, it is a balanced unit, don't want to throw that off with a different mass plug. If it does not have a plug, just flush the system, costs more in fluid but why mix the new with the old?
Are you sure it doesn't mean replace as in put it back in?
Another thing to point out on my post is that I am the king of re-use. My boat motor manual calls for replacement of just about everything you touch whenever you touch it. If you even glance at it, replace gasket and bolts etc???? I could go broke doing that and have found most things can be re-used when assembled properly if they spec out. I have replaced only one oil pan plug gasket in all my years of wrenching if that tells you anything. I will not tolerate a leak but overkill is just that.
Well there a a few folks who have rebuilt their own trannies on this site. Hopefully they can verify or debunk what I have said. Nothing like been there done that.
