I'm wondering what other models have the same transfer case shifter so that I can find what I need. It is for a 1996 F350 with 5 speed manual transmission and PSD engine. It is a Borg Warner transfer case.
I do not need the shifter cane that comes up through the floor. I need the aluminum piece that the cane attaches to and pivots on the transmission.
I posted an ad in the classifieds, but I need to know what other models will have the same part so that I can search a broader range of vehicles for this part. Is what I need specific to a 5 speed PSD, or will one from an automatic 351 or 460 work? what year range will work? anyone have any ideas? I need to find one ASAP. The dealer wants 5 times what I'm willing to pay, so the used route is the only way for me. If you got one email me at linckeil@hotmail.com
thanks for the reply. i will look for a tag on the trasfer case to identify the model. any suspisions which one i have or there's an equal chance it can be either?
so if i find the same transfer case as mine, it will have the shifter linkage i need regardless of what engine/transmission it's mated to?
...and yes, the engine /trans makes no difference. the shifter bolts to the transfer case to trans adapter.
I beg to differ at least as far as a BW1356 is concerned. My E4OD shifter (c)has a long rod (stamped E4OD) while the ZF (r) and M5OD (l) (stamped M5OD) had a short rod. The shifter mount bolt holes are also different. That's how I wound up with this assortment:
oh. OK. i was not aware of that. on all my trucks, the shifter mounted to the t-case adapter, not the trans. and on the 88, when i swapped the 5 speed for the C6, everything stayed the same.
TJC: Maybe the 3 speed C6 is shorter and its 4X4 tailshaft housing is longer? That's good to know that the C6 is the same size as the 5 speed. You didn't have to chage driveshaft length?
linckeil: did you break the aluminum housing? They can be tig welded to good as new.
the adapter i got from the junkyard was broken, but i replaced it with the same part # from ford. i think it is actually 2 inch shorter than the one that is supposed to be used with the C6, cause the trans mount ended up being 1 inch to short to fit in the cross member. i had to move the cross member forward 2 inch to bolt it all up.. i actually should have lengthened the rear shaft, and shortened the front shaft, but my truck does not leave the ground. if i go off road, i go slow enough to keep all 4 on the solid, and do not bottom out the suspension either. so i don't have to worry about pulling the rear shaft out, and the 2 inches shorter is compensated for in the front slip yolk.
gustang818, yes mine looks just like the shifter in the middle of the picture you posted. the aluminum piece broke. tig welding is an option, but i'd rather replace it with a used one. probably a cheaper option too. you wanna sell me the one in your picture?
I sold it to a guy last November. The guy who welded it up for me had one like it for sale for maybe $30 or so but it also was welded. I think his name was Dave at Marty's Tool and Die Welding in Redford MI 313 531 1255. He did a really nice job welding mine. While it was apart I put a couple zerks in so I could grease it to prevent it from seizing up.
I think that kind of t-case shifter came with the E4OD on at least the 92-96 F-150 and 250s. My '92 F-150 had one and the 94 F-250 I just bought also has the same shifter.
It would be a ZF S5-47. I wound up using the shifter on the left in the foto which came off a 1989 F-150 with a an M5OD 5 speed and it mated right up to my 1996 ZF tranny. The M5OD and the ZF t-case shifters are interchangeable so if you found one of those you should be good. I did have to heat the handle of the 1989 shifter and bend it down because it interfered with the dash.
would the shifter on the left in your photo work for me? it doesn't look like it has to be pushed down when going into low range like the shifter in the center requires.
It should. That's what I put on my ZF trans and it works great. It's one that you pull to the left and then back to get into 4WD. The one on the right came with the ZF when I bought it but it was missing some pieces.
Remember if you get the one on the left that you will probably have to bend the shift handle. Ford changed dashes in the 92 trucks and the shift **** hits. Some heat and black paint and no one will know it didn't grow there.
