I just installed a Drawtite hitch on my wife's ride. Do any of you guys know if any company offers a plug in connector for an '06 E150 so I don't have to cut into the taillight harness? I haven't been able to find one.
The dealer is the only place I know to get a plug in pig tail for E-series vans. There is a connector attached to the frame on the drivers side in front of the rear axle that the pigtail plugs into. The pigtail is expensive (+/- $80) so I didn't buy it. Instead I bought a plug with 6 feet of wire on it and spliced it in at the pigtail connector. That worked better than hacking into the taillight harness would have. I soldered my splices and covered them with heat-shrink tubing. Everything works great.
The service manager at my local FORD dealer gave me a trailer wiring pigtail that plugged right into the rear wiring harness. All I had to do was butt splice the connecting wires to the trailer lighting outlet I wanted to use that matched my existing trailer set up. I still use the familiar old style diecast plug & socket, not as big as my thumb.
FORD offers a complete plug in set up too. I put one on my Dad's F-150. It plugs into an exisiting tap in the rear wiring harness the same way, but terminates in a bulky black plastic round socket.
Find out if your Econoline was equipped with towing package. This option provides for break away battery charging & other stuff that makes it easy to hook up wiring.
Thanks for the info, it doesn't have the towing package I work for IH so we deal with the Ford dealers on a regular basis, I'm gonna see if I can get that pigtail at dealer cost
