Ok so I decided its time to get a newer ranger so I am either gonna get a 99,00, or 01 ranger. Is there any advantages to one over the other. Also I what years use torsion bar front suspension. I am for sure getting a 4.0l supercab. Does the 5-speed auto come as the standard auto tranny for the 4.0l or is it the 4-speed. Anyways I am gonna get a 5-speed. Well so anyone have any pros or cons over the years listed. Thanks for the info.
All of the ones you listed will have torsion bars in front (started in 98). The 01 has a different grill/front clip, so it looks different, and the 01 will also have the sohc, while 00 and before have the ohv. 5 speed autos started before 99 iirc, and there was only 1 auto offered each year. All the autos are likely to need rebuilt between 100-150k miles, as they are not particularly durable.
I'd go for the 01 if I could, since the sohc has more torque and power. I also like the looks of the 01+ better.
I agree. '01 looks more modern, plus the SOHC added more horsepower and torque (though higher in the powerband if you do much towing). You are going to get a 5-speed what, auto or manual? The manual will be the M5OD either way.
Really it depends on the mileage though... if you find a '99 with lower miles than the '01 (considerably lower) and at a killer price, I'd say go for it.
If memory serves correctly, somewhere midway through '01 they switched from the PVH auto hubs (which have a poor reputation) to the current design, which is supposed to be more reliable. Obviously a non-issue if you want a 4x2, and since the AVM manual hubs are now available, I'd consider it a non-issue for 4x4, too.

I think it was way before that, since my 00 had the current setup where the front axle is turning all the time, just like the 03 does.
The new system is reliable because it's constant engagement, there's no hub or axle disconnect. As far as I'm concerned, it's hard to beat the manual t-case and lockouts, they just can't leave nothing alone, if it's not broke, why fix it?
Slightly off topic, but the PVH would that be the kind installed on a 92 4x4 Ranger? I ask this, because my next "new" vehicle will be a '92 4x4 with the 4.0L engine, and 5 spd man trans.
No, it has a different system, a 92 may have lockout hubs and a manual transfer case for that mater, or it could have push button 4wd with auto locking hubs.
if you buy a ranger from the years of 97 - 02 with an auto id recommend making the dealer update the valve body gasket and valve body tsb's. ford is trying to hide these problems from the public. they are both cheap fixes and save a ton of heartace later.
The "92 I was looking at had the push button 4x4. It was a standard cab green with tan interior. Only had 35k on it, and was selling for $1,850. Someone got to it before I could get the money. So now I am just going to save my pennies and dimes, and wait for another one like that to come along.
Yeah, it had all the options I wanted but was green instead of blue. However, the low mileage, and low price made it a must have. I just couldn't get the money in time. It lasted 3 days on the lot.
Yeah, you know one like that wasn't going to last long. Could you have given them something to hold it, or did you just figure it wouldn't sell that fast? Not that it matters now, there will be others.
