Looking to do the coolant flush on my 02 PSD, Gold Coolant and the recommended coolants I found were Motorcraft Premium Gold, Zerex G05 (autozone sells), Peak global lifetime(gold bottle) and peak extended life (silver bottle). The Zerex was 10.99 a gallon at Autozone. Hope this helps.
I just wanted to alert everyone that we have just received a letter on DEX-COOL Litigation from Jackson County, MO. It is information of a class action suit against General Motors for anyone that purchased or leased a GM vehicle on or before Jan 9, 2006, that was equipped with Dex-Cool coolant at the factory. The complaint, in short is, "The coolant failed to perform as promised, in certain engines, it is incompatible with the lower intake manifold gasket & causes the gaskets to fail, it has also been known to cause corrosion and the formation of a mud-like substance called sludge that damages various engine and cooling system parts."
This is an abbreviated highlight of the heart of the litigation. I hope this info will help someone, hopefully avoid using Dex-Cool.
I can't believe the parts counter guys would try to sell you DexCool for the Powerstroke, that just goes to show how much they know. Do not use DexCool in a Powerstroke, don't use DexCool in any Ford product.
You say you found Prestone ELC. That is fine, but you have to make sure it's HD (Heavy Duty) ELC. Here is a quote from "Gooch" over at TDS:
"Look for the Fleetrite ELC at any International dealer. It is supplied to International by Shell (same stuff as Rotella ELC).
Look for the CAT ELC at any Caterpillar dealer.
Carriers of Exxon/Mobil products can get you the Mobil 1 ELC.
Any store that carries Prestone can get you the Prestone HD ELC.
Any store that carries Zerex can get you the Zerex HD Extreme ELC.
Any store that carries Peak can get you the Final Charge ELC.
There are a bunch of off-brands of HD ELC too. Look at truck stops, truck shops, truck dealers, equipment rental shops, lubricant distributors and jobbers, and quality auto parts stores.
Your efforts will be worth it. Good Luck. "
I think the parts guy is making the same mistake that many people make, thinking any coolant that is red/orange is dexcool. The diesel ELC coolants (like Rotella T) are not dexcool.
DEXCOOL is a GM (General Motors) trademark name for the coolant they put in GM vehicles since 1996. Color doesn't make a product DEXCOOL. DEXCOOL happens to be orange. DEXCOOL should never go into ANY vehicle especially FORD. I say it should never go into any vehicle becuase there are sufficient numbers of people on the internet who are replacing gaskets or entire engines due to damage from DEXCOOL. GM will deny any problems and will not pay for any problems once you are out of the warranty period. My wifes Chevy (sorry to admit it, my driver is an '03 F350 Powerstroke) has the following damage: Leaking intake gasket, leaking head gaskets, leaking heater control valve, and leaking water pump. It's already had one previous water pump and a radiator. The vehicle has only 68,000 miles which is smack dab in the middle of the range I hear other peoples problems occuring. Don't believe me, Google "DEXCOOL" and see for yourself.
Don't use DEXCOOL in ANY vehicle!!!!
