has anyone pute a newer 5 speed tranny in a 72 f250 4x4.maybe off a 460 2wheel drive would proble have to got a new intermidiate driveline but it would be worth it.
Miner, the newer five speed from behind the 460 is a nice tranny but the bell is cast in the case and will not fit the 390 or 360 most '72 4x4 were powered with. A Clark 280 series, a NP 542 or a NV 4500 is the way to go. DF
Or go with a direct bolt up without wasted money on adapters (they know you need it and charge their high price for adapters) to a 500 or 600 ft/lb rated TKO 5 speeds.
After driving a 625 HP BB road race Vette with a 600 TKO nothing else comes close in a smooth shifting strong transmissions.
this will get ya started. http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/tr-3550.html
Choice of different OD ratios and they don't weigh as
much as other tranny's, no need to reduce your your
load capacity.
