I have a 1990 Ford Bronco EB. It has an 8.8" rear differential. I am wondering how many splines this has, for I am wanting to buy a locker for this setup. If any body else else that rear end I am wondering which locker you resorted to using.
How many splines for an 8.8" rear Ford differential?
Which locker is compatible with that setup?
I am pretty sure that you have 31 splines. I personally have a lock right which is made by powertrax. I like it a whole lot and it is very easy to install, and for me the most important factor was price(i.e. cheap). I don't drive that much around town or on the pavement, so I can't give you an honest opinion of how it is on the street. I went four wheeling this weekend and it worked great in the mud and sand and gave me no trouble.
Do you have an 8.8" in yours? because I have found on the internet where an 8.8 has just 30 splines..and if that is the case, there are no available lockers (that I have found) for an 8.8 with 30...let me know if you are pretty sure on taht 31 splines..and if anybody else knows exactly please..please let me know...also-if you guys are sure its 30 do you know of any place that has lockers for 30 spline diffs?
Your 8.8 has 31 spline axles, being a half ton truck! if you have any questions call reider racing 800-357-1330 I ran an 83 Bronco for 12 years trying all sorts of gearing/limited slip/locker combinations for mud bogging/hill climbs/quarter mile and street use. I found the detroit locker to be the most interesting!!! You almost didn't need 4 wheel drive to plow snow (believe it or not) It made some very scary noises during a simple turn around in someones driveway! I had 3 different 460 motors in this Bronco. From stock to very healthy. Twisted 2 sets of rear axles, sheared 1 set (4:10 gears) Never damaged gears or carrier. If you do decide to go with a locker, get a quality pair of axles from currie or strange! It will be a learning experience you'll love Good luck!
I just had an Eaton Posi-Traction unit put in mine. I know it isn't a real locker, but it seems to give me some good traction. I haven't had a chance to try it in the snow yet...but I will by the end of the month.
