Hubs and 4wd
Manual Hubs on 1989 Bronco:
Problem: In 2wd with hubs locked a loud chattering sound is heard coming from the left front wheel. Sounds like a grinding, and gets louder the faster I go. In 4wd, both hubs locked, in mud, neither tire spins, but the drive shaft does, and same sound is heard. On pavement in 4wd hubs locked sound doesn't happen. Hubs unlocked works fine.
More info: I took out the entire hub assembly, cleaned it thoroughly, regreased it, and put it back in. None of the gears are particularly worn or look "bad" as far as I can tell. Mechanic has told me its just because the hub isn't locking all the way.
Should I just replace the hubs? Theyre the factory manuals (I think theyre just Warns). Or is there something wrong with my diff?
The only thing I can think of is on pavement the front tires are being "pushed" by the back tires at the same rate the front diff is trying to push them, so the sound doesn't occur. But then when its in mud the back tires (and drive shaft) are spinning much faster than the front tires are actually being pushed, so they clack.
So is this a hub problem, or should I look somewhere else?
Thanks
