There's no power to a pyro besides for the light. It has only 2 wires of dissimilar metals that create voltage and gives the reading on your gauge. Check to make sure that your wiring is unbroken. I had a loose connection in mine that would cause the gauge to go dead. I have heard that you can test your themocouple with a torch and a voltmeter, but I don't know what kind of voltage you should be seeing, only that we're talking millivolts I believe. If your thermocouple is bad you can replace it with any brand as long as its the appropriate type. Generally type K's are used preturbo and have yellow and red wires, while type J's are post turbo and have white and red wires. HTH.
I've experienced some problems with my pyro as well, [on my 2nd autometer], the needle would stick [?], I have to tap it to get it to move. Talked to the shop that sold it to me, and they said they have never had a problem with them but would replace it with another one [still under warrenity] They also told me to contact autometer and see what they had to say....turns out, they will replace it a pretested one to make sure it works.
After all that....the pyrometer [that wasn't working right] is working perfectly....go figure? In fact I'm reading higher EGT's than before....just crusing around town [empty], I'm 380 to 470 and if I push it, 700 easy....900 plus going up any hill, it's like I've turned up the pump, which I haven't. I'm going thru more oil than usual but wow, these are high EGT's??!!
