How bad is it?

Of course dad's always the last to know...my son's F150 had been, according to him "vibrating". Now I've found out he had a leaking rear-end and consequently ran it out of fluid and who'd of guessed, it locked up!! How bad is the damage and can it even be repaired?

Welcome to FTE "Dad". Well if its locked up, the minimum is going to be a new ring and pinion set. My guess? You will need to remove all bearings too. You are probably looking at a complete axle rebuild (I have to figure that there is a lot of misc. metal floating around now that will permeate everything in that axle). Do you have any trusted repair shops in the area, that specialize in drivetrains? Typically it isnt the parts that will hurt the wallet, its the labor to reinstall and properly index the gears. It takes a very skilled laborer to do that. Good luck in getting quotes.

Thanks

Don't know which is harder...opening the wallet or finding a "trusted" repair shop. At least I know it can be fixed and not buried. Appreciate the info.

I have moved this thread to the 1987-96 forum for you. The guys here should have some more appropriate answers for your particular dilemma. Good luck.

would be quicker and cheaper to do what quicklook said and get axle assembly from junkyard. i just bought one for my 95 for $250 already pulled from truck. just make sure you get right gear ratios and if you have abs or not. it will cost you at least $250 just to have someone set a new ring and pinion your current axle. figure on about $500 to fix the one you have, then call or go to local junkyards and see how much they want for one.

look at the code on your door sticker and match that, a rear end between 92-96 would be ideal.

you can go a little older but no reason for it.

get limited slip and the same ratio if you did not have it.

go to junkyards and get some prices and post back if you have questions.

I would also suggest just finding a complete axle and swapping it out. Just make sure you get the same gear ratio, and that all the brackets for sway bars and the like are in the same location. It would be much easier to just switch the whole assembly since setting up gears can be difficult and some special tools should be used.
