93 F-150 302 Engine Problem

Since Mr. T and now Gilligan have been bothering me to post, I figured I would ask a question regarding my fathers truck mentioned in the title. It is a 93 F-150 with the 302 EFI with about 105K miles. We have owned the truck since 96 when it had 30k miles. Last weekend while travelling down the freeway about 75, the check engine light came on and the engine started shaking really bad. When we came to a stop light after the freeway, it idled like crap, and barely made it home. Anyway, my dad replaced the spark plugs and wires, and still no success. Has anyone else had this problem or know what it could be? The truck has had a relatively light work load, mostly daily driver(under 5 miles) with a 300 mile trip maybe twice a year. My dad is an aircraft mechanic and does most of the automotive work himself and knows it fairly well, but is stumped on this problem. He had a neighbor who is also an auto mechanic, check it out and he thinks it could be the timing chain and/or a broken piston. Any information would help. Thanks
Andrew

Dump the computer codes. That is the only way to find problems on modern engines. Aircraft mechanic skills are no match for a computer-driven truck engine. Planes are simple in order to keep them reliable. Cars and trucks are complex for emissions.

An EGR valve stuck open caused me a similar problem, but you have to dump the codes to know where to look.

EFI is much simpler than you think.

Go to http://fordfuelinjection.com and click on "Getting Codes" to find out how you can pull codes yourself. Post back the codes you come up with. The check engine light being on means there is a code stored for the problem, and hopefully the code will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the responses. It turns out that it was a bad valve in the 5th cylinder. Sounds like a lot of money. My dad is pretty mad because in 18 years, his 300 six cylinder never had any major problems. Oh well

That's almost exactly what happened to me. Mine was #6. A valve got slightly bent, so 0 comp. in #6. I was pretty lucky, no piston damage, no dropped valve.
