Some people like to double the friction modifier in diffs. Others use oils with modifiers already in them. With the oil they were using, they may have already had some modifier in it and they only wanted some fomoco in there too.
The idea is that 8oz is normal and the LS slips more, and 4oz makes the LS slip a bit less and work more agressively. If it grips too tightly on 4oz and chatters around turns, you can add more until you're happy.
