I've been driving my wife to work, lots of snow and ice in central Indiana over the last few days. I had an interesting situation yesterday.
Drove her to work, about 8 miles or so, moderate hills, snow and ice. Average about 35 mph. I didn't put it in 4wd. Temp was about 20. My transmission, which always runs pretty cool, was at 125 (have guages).
On the way back, I did put it in 4wd as conditions got worse. By the time I was home, my temp was about 160.
I know my temps aren't dangerous, but I was a little suprised at the difference between the two. What type of rise do you guys normally see? Is this normal?
Yes it sure seems funny, but it happens to me too, I have an 05 350 and it also runs hotter in 4x4. Not over heating hot but i guess its beacuse the tranny now has more work to do.
With part time systems, the transfer case spins each tire at the same speed. When turning or just to over come the tiny differences in tire height, the tires have to break traction which puts a little more load on the transmission. A rise is normal in 4wd.
250 seems to be the max temp, when parts start to fail. I don't go that fast in 4wd, usually 15mph max so my guage doesn't register much change. Also, when we installed the warn semi hidden kit, we had to move the trans cooler. Sence the cooler was moved, the fluid stay much cooler. The faster you travel, the warmer the fluid should get. I would suggest running Royal Purple ATF, and possibly upgrading your trans cooler.
